What does the above fig. represent? Objective 4.6 Define Pressure Element Principles What is pressure? Pressure is a measure of the force applied to a unit area. Force is the pushing or pulling which can cause an object to move or change shape. Force can be applied in any direction. If a 50-pound block measuring 10 square inches on each side is placed on a table of the same size, the pressure on the table is: P = 50 pounds / 10 square inches= 5 psi. The most common expression of a unit of pressure is psi which equals pounds per square inch. Pressure Scales There are three common scales for measuring pressure.
