Objective 4.5 Define Piston Actuator Principles. How Actuators Work. An actuator is a motor that converts energy into torque which then moves or controls a mechanism or a system into which it has been incorporated. It can introduce motion as well as prevent it. An actuator typically runs on electric or pressure (such as hydraulic or pneumatic). Hydraulic Piston Actuator Principles: A hydraulic actuator uses the face of a pressurized liquid usually oil, to position the valve stem. When a hydraulic valve actuator a cylinder assembly is attached to a valve.a piston inside the cylinder moves up and down.the piston is attached to the valve stem. When a hydraulic oil is pumped to the top of the piston the valve will close. When the hydraulic oil is pumped to the bottom side of the piston the valve will open. 52 53
