Cursed Fate Lore Two distant cosmic forces, Thw and Khellos, contest for power over humanity. Khellos made a promise to its followers centuries ago that it would descend to civilization in the form of a human vassal. With the cursed birth of Ahmoset, next in line for emperor of Nakosu, a tremor broke apart the universe at large. He was the vassal born to carry out Khellos’s whims upon intelligent life. Chaos magic, a myth for decades, made a sudden resurgence. Ahmoset was a natural prodigy with an affinity for magic like none had ever seen - by the age of 14, he was crowned emperor and renowned for his talent and maturity. Khellos spoke through its vassal from time to time, demanding sacrifices and giving commands to the people of its empire. It promised great prosperity and magical prowess to those that would cater to its desires. It had a propensity for making cruel promises with malicious prices. It had no hand in expanding or furthering the gains of the empire, merely acting out of its own desires and leaving the work of running the country to its vassal. With the return of chaos magic came something miraculous, yet perverse. When Ahmoset’s most trusted advisor, Zaikost - the man who had raised him after his mother’s death - fell deathly ill, Ahmoset pleaded for Khellos to restore him to health again. It agreed, and performed a miracle: Zaikost indeed returned to full health, but he had become something horrible and dysplastic, an abomination, with his organs laid bare and innumerable mouths and eyes shut behind a helmet of flesh. This was a creature produced through a vile miracle, a human which Khellos had “bitten”. Zaikost lost his sense of self and began devouring humans left and right, growing exponentially more powerful and gaining a proficiency in dangerous chaos magic. Rather than killing him and perhaps ending his misery, Ahmoset, against the wishes of the empire, freed Zaikost into the wild where he would go undiscovered for decades. The power coursing through Ahmoset’s body took a toll upon him. He was growing feeble at the age of 24. Ahmoset’s advisors feared he would die soon, and asked Khellos what they should do to preserve their empire. Khellos announced its plans to every resident of the empire simultaneously. Its vassal was going to go into a state of suspended animation for centuries, waiting for “something”. Until then, they would need to find a way to sustain the empire themselves. They failed. The residual chaos magic began to leak from Ahmoset’s sleeping body, destroying life and crops and forcing the citizens to lock him in a casket in order to survive. But by then, many citizens had already been Bitten, and were greedily feasting on the living residents of the empire. It wasn’t even a year before nearly 95% of the empire’s massive population had become monsters. In a starvation-induced act of desperation, Ahmoset’s close friend and once potential consort, Taghar, pried open his casket and began to devour his body. A vision befell her - an ancient, unfathomable evil, overwhelming her every sense, spoke to her and placed a curse upon her. Since she had disturbed the health of its vassal, Khellos vowed that every living thing Taghar touched would be Bitten and turn against her. Not only that, but she would be Bitten herself, and even retain her humanity as she was forced to eat humans to survive. 450 years passed. Every last human was either eaten or died of old age. Bitten had traversed the continent and crossed the seas in search of new prey. For decades, they have been dwelling in Edenton, a walled country on an island led by a church which worships another outer god called Thw. Note: Time is communicated through the years counted after Ahmoset’s birth, or AB. Countries Nakosu: Mainland country. Worships the chaos god, Khellos, whose motif is sunlight and heat sources in general. The empire there fell apart in 23 AB. Edenton: Island country. Worships the Mourning Mother, whose motif is cool colors and the moon. Birthplace of the Warrior’s Guild and Her Clergy. Factions Warrior’s Guild: A large troop of fighters, not sponsored by the church, who fight under the moonlight for the protection of Edenton. Bitten: Humans unfortunate enough to witness one of Khellos’s “miracles” transform into horribly mutated creatures which hate sunlight and cannibalize to gain strength. Her Clergy: The church established within Edenton, dedicated to worshiping Thw. Headed by Chem, a powerful cleric. Characters Ahmoset: Young despot of Nakosu. He was appointed king in 14 AB after his mother inexplicably died, and ruled alongside his advisor, Zaikost. He was used as a direct vessel of Khellos and received visions on a daily basis. In 18 AB, Khellos gave him one last directive: to sit on his throne and wait for another sign. It would be 468 AB before this sign would arrive. Taghar: Ahmoset’s advisor. She transformed into a monster shortly after Chelos went silent, and subsisted on the flesh of humans after Nakosu fell. Zaikost: Once Ahmoset returned, he took the most powerful Bitten under his wing as servants. Zaikost, the most loyal among them, wields a massive pike fashioned from bone and flesh. Kharaa: Kharaa is one of Ahmoset’s Bitten servants. It displays the unique ability to divide into four identical copies of itself. Chem: Head cleric of the church within Edenton’s walls. Has a reputation as being soft-spoken and dead calm. Edward: Main character of Grand Display. When he was young, he lost his father to a Bitten horde which overran his village.
