CREATIVE WRITING Reviewer FIGURES OF SPEECH IRONY -Irony is a term for a figure of speech, Irony is when something happens that is opposite from what is expected. It can often be funny, but it is also used in tragedies. There are three types of Irony: 1.Situational Irony 2.Dramatic Irony 3.Verbal Irony OXYMORON -A figure of speech that combines contradictory words with opposing meanings. ex. organized chaos‚ friendly fight‚ hateful love PARADOX -Two contradictory words found in a statement, and sometimes just a self-contradictory statement. ex. I hate what I love PARALLELISM -Means that similar parts of a sentence have the same structure: nouns with nouns, verbs with verbs, and phrases with phrases ex. I like singing, kayaking, and dancing. ANTITHESIS -A figure of speech that states strongly contrasting ideas placed in juxtaposition. ex. Fair is foul, and foul is fair. METAPHOR -A figure of speech that implicitly compares two unrelated things, typically by stating that one thing is another. ex. The exam was a piece of cake SIMILE -A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid. ex. Grandad is wise like an owl SYNECDOCHE -A figure of speech in which the word for a part of something is used to refer to the thing itself. Ex. Our class brain always has all the answers. METONYMY -A figure of speech in which a word is replaced with another word closely associated with the original concept. Ex. The crown will find an heir The kitchen is busy during dinner time PERSONIFICATION -A figure of speech in which human characteristics are attributed to an abstracquality, animal, or inanimate object. ex. The trees danced back and forth in the wind SYLLEPSIS -A figure of speech in which a word is applied to two others in different senses. ex. She broke my heart and my phone screen. ONOMATOPOEIA -A figure of speech that uses words to describe the sounds made by all living things including people, animals, birds and all inanimate objects. ex. The cars SMASHED into each other. HYPERBOLE -A rhetorical device that is mainly used to make something look and sound a lot better than it actually is. ex. I am so hungry‚ I could eat a horse. LITOTES -understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by the negative of the contrary ex. You are not wrong = you are right ELLIPSIS -An ellipsis is a punctuation mark of three dots (...) that shows an omission of words, represents a pause, or suggests there's something left unsaid. ex. My cat… he’s gone… ASYNDETON -the omission or absence of a conjunction between parts of a sentence. ex. “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” “ Live‚ Laugh‚ Love” ALLITERATION -the occurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of adjacent or closely connected words. ex. Peter piper picked a peck of peppers. ASSONANCE -Repitition of vowel sounds ex. Clap your hands and stamp your feet. ANAPHORA -repetition of a word or expression at the beginning of successive phrases, clauses, sentences, or verses especially for rhetorical or poetic effect. ex. With malice toward none‚ with charity for all‚ with firmness in the right. TYPES OF DICTION What is diction? -the careful selection of words to communicate a message or establish a particular voice or writing style. Ex. “ please ensure that you arrive on time vs. don’t be late! ” Formal Diction Long/Complex Sentences Ex. Please be advised that the meeting scheduled tomorrow has been postponed next week. Informal Diction Short Sentences Colloquial -used in or characteristic of familiar and informal conversation. Ex. Don’t chicken out You’re nuts Slang -It is classified as a very informal form of language Ex. Flex- to show off “ He is flexing his new phone to his classmates ” Poetic -the operating language of poetry, language employed in a manner that sets poetry apart from other kinds of speech or writing. Ex. Poems and fiction books WHAT IS TONE? -A tone is a literary device that conveys the author’s attitude toward the subject. WHAT IS A THEME? -A summarized statement which contains the meaning of the poem. WHAT IS ENJAMBMENT? -A poetic term for the continuation of a sentence or phrase from one line of poetry to the next.
