**CPAR 1^st^ Quarter Review** - **What is Art?** - it is the **expression or application of human creative skill and imagination,** producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. - **What is Contemporary Art?** - is the **art** that springs out of the **present-day** events and passions of the society. - it is developed in the year **1960s-present time**.. - **Dance** is a performing art form consisting of purposefully selected **sequences of human movement.** - **Music** it is the art form that **combines vocal and instrumental** sound to create a composition. - **Theatrical Performance** is the **art form of performance.** Dramatic text/musical entertainment is portrayed on the stage by actors and actresses. - **Literature** is the art form of language through the **combine use of words, creating meaning and experience.** - **Architecture** is the **structure** that meant to be used as **shelter** - **Film** is a **technological translation of theater**; special effects are utilized to enhance the story telling. - **Visual Arts** are the artworks, such painting, photography or sculptures that appeals primarily to the **visual sense** and typically exists in permanent form. - **Handicraft** is activity that involves making something in a skillful way by using your hands - **Banga- i**s a **contemporary performance of Kalinga of the Mountain Province** in the Philippines that **illustrate the languid grace of a tribe**. - **Pangalay-** traditional dance is known for its intricate hand and arm movements, which are often **accompanied by the use of metal claws called janggay.** - **Binaylan Banog-** is a Hagaonon and Agusanon Manobo tribal dance that **depicts the movement of a hawk.** - The **Maglalatik** is an indigenous dance from the Philippines in which coconut shell halves that are secured onto the dancer's hands and on vests upon which are four or six more coconut shell halves **A. Pre-Colonial Era** - **Before the arrival of the Spaniards**, the types of indigenous music found in the country were instrumental and vocal. **B. Spanish Colonial Era** - **Musical forms** that were born from this period were **religious hymns and chants, orchestras and bands. Religion** is the **greatest contribution of the Spaniards** to the Filipinos. **C. American Colonial Era** - simple hymns taught in schools **D. Musical Forms** - **Kundiman and Harana-** That **signifies love and affection** for someone, highly emotional and sentimental, expressing personal sorrow - **Ballad-** A traditional sing that **narrates an event in a community** in modern times like acoustic, and love songs. - **Chamber Music-** A form of instrumental music **composed by a small ensemble** where each part is played by one player, as **opposed to an orchestra** performed by a group of musicians. - **Choral Music-** Musical composition intended to be performed by a **group of singers** called **choir**. - **Liturgical Music-** Songs intended for **Christian church services**. - **Opera-** Combination of both **music and theatre.** - **Pop Music-** Used to describe music that is readily available to **broad populace**. - **Protest Songs-** Songs that bring to **light injustices and inequality in society**. **E. Musical Instruments** - **Gangsa** -The **flat gong** commonly played by the groups in **Cordillera region** - **Tongatong*-*** is a **bamboo percussion instrument** used by the people of **Kalinga** to communicate with spirit during house blessings - **Kulintang** refers to a **racked gong chime instrument** played in the **southern Islands of the Philippines**, along with its varied accompanying ensembles - **Kudyapi** is a Philippine two-stringed guitar, fretted boat-lute **F. Theatrical Performance** - **Zarzuela or Sarsuwela** was an **operetta** which features **singing and dancing interspersed with prose dialogue** which allowed the story to be carried out in song - **Senakulo or Passion Play** was written in 1740 by **Gaspar Aquino de Belen**. It's narrative was culled entirely from the **biblical account of Christ's passion and death on the cross** **G. Literature** - **Doctrina Christiana** -- the first printed book in the Philippines, compiling song lyrics, commandments, sacraments and other catechetical material - **Carta Hydrographica y Chorographica de las Yslas Filipinas** -- the first scientific map of the Philippines. **H. Visual Arts** - The **Spoliarium** is a painting by Filipino painter **JUAN LUNA** which **depicts dying gladiators**. - **Watercolor Painting** is a painting method in which the **paints are made of pigments**. **Erwin Mallari** is a **well-known watercolor artist** in the Philippines. - **Portrait Paintings-** a portrait or drawing depicts the image of a particular **person or animal, or group** thereof. The **subject of a portrait** is usually called a **"sitter**", because traditionally people would sit in front of the artist to have their portrait painted. **Simon Flores** painted the famous Portrait of the Quiazon Family. - **Landscape Painting** depicts the natural scenery in art. **Fernando Amorsolo**- nicknamed the **"Grand Old Man of Philippine Art**," he was the **first ever** to be recognized as a **National Artist of the Philippines.** I. **Sculpture** - **Bulul --** people of **Cordillera** carve this and regarded as **granary god** that plays an important role in rituals. - **Hagabi --** It is a **wooden bench** that marks the **socioeconomic status** of the owner. - **Santos**- - Christianized communities in Laguna and Pampanga are known for carvong santos or sculptures of saints as well as other wooden sculptures of secular or non-religious orientation. **J. Handicraft** - **Pottery** is made by forming a **clay** body into objects of a **required shape and heating them to high temperature** - **Weaving** is a method of **fabric production** in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a **fabric or cloth.** **I. PRE-CONQUEST** - In art historical terms, we refer to **art before the coming of the first colonizers** as "***[pre-conquest]***". In stylistic terms, we refer to it as "***[indigenous]*"** to emphasize the **idea that our ancestors have been making art even before colonization.** - Many of the rituals which consider as the earliest forms of theater are still alive in the various regions. These are the following: - **Cañao or Kanyaw** -- found in the **Cordillera Autonomous Regions**. Officiated by **shaman or mumbaki**.
