Theft Leader: Anthony Santucci Secretary: Tony Ramirez Members: Ethan Chorba, Harper Krolak, Basant Davis, Cormac O’Meara, Sebastian Rodriguez, Miguel Morales Larceny ● Larceny: The legal work for theft, meaning the act of taking someone’s belongings without permission and with intent of not returning said possession. 1. Grand theft: The act of stealing one’s property worth over a certain amount of money. ● The amount of money varies state from state, but it generally hovers around $500. ● Grand theft is a felony level crime, meaning that grand theft is punishable for more than a year in prison. 1. Petty theft: The act of stealing one’s property worth less than a certain amount of money. ● Petty theft is a misdemeanor level crime, meaning that petty theft is punishable for up to a year in prison. Burglary Burglary: is the unlawful entry into any building with the intent to commit a crime. Earlier in time burglary only meant breaking into a home at night to steal. It was then expanded to include illegally entering any building at any point in time or to steal or commit any crime. Even in some states it was expanded it to also include breaking into cars. An example of burglary would be if somebody were to break into a building/car to steal your wallet. Armed Robbery Armed Robbery- Using a dangerous weapon to take something from a person. In most states, even pretending to have something considered like a weapon Example: If a person pulls a gun out and points it at you and takes your wallet, that person has committed armed robbery. Armed robbery is a more serious offense than a simple robbery, and carries a heavier penalty. Embezzlement/Fraud Embezzlement: when people take property that they have been trusted with. An example of Embezzlement is if you have a friend watch over your house while you are gone and they take money from a table, closet, etc, but embezzlement is different from larceny because the person takes possession of the property legally. Fraud: is knowingly misrepresenting a fact to get property from another person. An example of Fraud would be if your friend is selling you a diamond ring(which he know it is fake) and he asks $300 for the ring. Your friend defrauded you of $300. Instead of larceny it is another form of stealing. Extortions/Receiving Stolen Property An extortion is making a threat with the intent of getting property from another person. The act could be committed with a non-violent or violent threat. Ex. Blackmail is considered a form of extortion. For instance, you threaten your friend that you’ll reveal that they have gone to jail unless they pay $2,500. (There also could be a violent act committed and could be considered extortion to a certain extent. If immediate harm is performed it is considered robbery.) Receiving stolen property consists of acknowledging the fact that you have acquired property that has been stolen. In every state it is against the law in every single state. Ex. For instance, if you see your friend erasing a serial number off of tablet and he gives you tablet and you assume full ownership you have received stolen property.
