COLEGIO FILIPINO 1900-1904 COLEGIO MERCANTIL 1904-1915 NATIONAL ACADEMY 1916-1921 History of NATIONAL UNIVERSITY NU 1921-onwards History of the National University FOUNDING YEARS 1900-1921 COLEGIO FILIPINO On the 1st of August 1900, Don Mariano Fortunato Jhocson began to teach a group of boys and girls on the ground floor of their family home in Quiapo. The name was proudly Filipino at a time when the Americans were laying the groundwork for their own brand of colonial rule and when most of the existing schools from the previous colonial era were owned and run by foreign entities, mostly Catholic religious orders. COLEGIO FILIPINO Started with one classroom and office then expanded every year. English and Spanish are the medium of instruction. Some of the teachers were students preparing for higher education at the University of Santo Tomas. In exchange for their services, they were given free boarding and lodging. COLEGIO FILIPINO Offered Basic Education: Primary - from 1st to 4th grade Intermediate - 5th to 7th grade Secondary - 1st to 4th year WHAT'S WITH COLEGIO FILIPINO? The first non-sectarian and co-educational private school in the Philippines. COLEGIO MERCANTIL In 1904, the name was changed to Colegio Mercantil after Mariano added commerce, bookkeeping, and accounting (3 years), and ceramic (4 years) courses to its curriculum. On May 12, 1913, it was officially allowed to confer high school diplomas to its graduates. COLEGIO MERCANTIL Initially had English and Spanish as media of instruction; 2 years after, it adopted English as primary medium of instruction. In June 1915, in cooperation with Ricardo Lacson, the opening of a college of law was accredited on Feb. 7, 1916 (Philippine Law School). NATIONAL ACADEMY Due to the rapid increase in student enrolment, the name of the school was changed to National Academy on October 26, 1916. The College of Liberal Arts was organized in December 1916 and accredited on February 15, 1918. Preparatory Law, 1st to 2nd year leading to the title of Associate in Arts Preparatory Medicine, 1st and 2nd year leading to the title of Associate in Arts Liberal Arts Course, 1st and 2nd year leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts NATIONAL UNIVERSITY National Academy was re- incorporated on January 17, 1921, and changed its name to National University.
