This period is characterized as a time when Europeans began exploring the world by sea in search of new trading routes, wealth, and knowledge. Portugal and Spain Dispute Treaty of Tordesillas Treaty of Tordesillas The 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas neatly divided the "New World" into land, resources, and people claimed by Spain and Portugal.
