Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to his disciples saying, "Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins." In Luke 22:19, he says, “Do this in remembrance of me.” of t h e E uc h a r i st The Lit urg y Preparation of the Altar/Gifts Prayer over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer Lord's Prayer Sign of Peace Fraction Rite (Breaking Bread) Communion Preparation of the Altar/ Presentation of the Gifts Like a meal = Setting the Table And offering the food “Gifts” are the bread and wine Brought forward from the people gathered (Now days = symbolically from us In Early church, people literally brought food to share with each other) of t h e E uc h a r i st The Lit urg y Preparation of the Altar/Gifts Prayer over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer Lord's Prayer Sign of Peace Fraction Rite (Breaking Bread) Communion Prayer over the Gifts All: "May The Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of God's name, for our good and the good of all God's Holy Church." of t h e E uc h a r i st The Lit urg y Preparation of the Altar/Gifts Prayer over the Gifts Eucharistic Prayer Lord's Prayer Sign of Peace Fraction Rite (Breaking Bread) Communion Eucharistic Prayer Long prayer – within it, the consecration (change of bread and wine to body and blood of Jesus) takes place. - It is the high point (most holy part) of Liturgy of Eucharist because of what happens here (consecration). (begins with dialogue…) Priest: "The Lord be with you." All: "And with your Spirit." Priest: "Lift up your hearts." All: "We lift them up to The Lord." Priest: "Let us give thanks to The Lord, our God." All: "It is right and just." Eucharistic Prayer Priest: "With all the angels and saints, we acclaim..." All: "Holy, Holy, Holy!..." (also called Sanctus) -----------------------Consecration-------------------------- Priest: "The Mystery of Faith." All: "Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free." Eucharistic Prayer ----------------------Doxology---------------------------- Priest: "Through Him, with Him, in Him, O God almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, forever and ever." --------------------Great Amen------------------------ All: "Amen." So what just happened? *We Welcome Christ to the Table *The Priest asks God to send the Holy Spirit to change the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ *The "Amen" is a resounding Yes! Accidents vs. Substance We do NOT believe that the Eucharist becomes “Jesus’ DNA” We DO believe that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist “The substance changes, while the accidents stay the same.” Accidents = appearance, external properties, etc. Substance = essence “Transubstantiation” (Tran”SUBSTAN(CE)”tiation) The Lord's Prayer and The Sign of Peace Fraction Rite (The Breaking of the Bread) Priest: "Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us... grant us peace." Priest: "Behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb." All: "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed." (from MT 8:8) Communion How We Receive (Catholics? Non-Catholics?) i n g R i te s Con cl u d Final Blessing Dismissal Final Blessing "May almighty God bless you in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." Prepares the community to go out and work in the community Priest: "Go forth, the Mass is ended." All: "Thanks be to God." Dismissal Word “MASS" from the Latin "ite missa est", meaning "Go, you are sent forth" (same root as dismissal - to be sent) HOW WILL YOU BE CHRIST IN THE WORLD?
