# Adobe Photoshop Basics ## Introduction Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Systems for macOS and Windows. It is frequently used image editing and creating software. ## Can be used to: - Create original artwork - Manipulate images - Retouch photographs - Repair damaged images - Create graphics for websites - Adding Special Effects using Filters ## File Format Photoshop files have default file extension as .PSD (Photoshop Document). A PSD file stores an image with support for most imaging options available in Photoshop. Photoshop files sometimes have the file extension .PSB (Photoshop Big) also known as “large document format”. ## Other Format: - Jpg - jpeg - png - gif - pict - tiff - bmp - pcx - pdp - pdf - raw - tga etc. ## Photoshop Interface **Menu Bar:** Contains menus for various features such as file, edit, image, layer, etc. **Options Bar Control Panel:** Displays options and settings for the currently selected tool. **Document Window:** Displays the image being edited. **Tools Panel:** Contains icons for all the tools available in Photoshop. **Panels:** Contain various panels for different functionalities like layers, adjustments, color, etc. ## Photoshop Tools Layout - **Move and Selection tools:** - Move - Rectangular Marquee - Elliptical Marquee - Single Column Marquee - Single Row Marquee - Lasso - Polygonal Lasso - Magnetic Lasso - Quick Selection - Magic Wand - **Crop and Slice tools:** - Crop - Perspective Crop - Slice - Slice Select - **Measuring tools:** - Eyedropper - 3D Material Eyedropper - Color Sampler - Ruler - Note - Count - **Retouching tools:** - Spot Healing Brush - Healing Brush - Patch - Content Aware - Red Eye - Clone Stamp - Pattern Stamp - Eraser - Background Eraser - Magic Eraser - **Painting tools:** - Brush - Pencil - Color Replacement - Mixer Brush - History Brush - Art History Brush - Gradient - Paint Bucket - 3D Material Drop - **Drawing and Type Tools:** - Pen - Freeform Pen - Add Anchor Point - Delete Anchor Point - Convert Point - Horizontal Type - Vertical Type - Horizontal Type Mask - Vertical Type Mask - **Navigation Tools:** - Hand - Rotate View - Zoom ## Working with the Toolbar Some of the Tool bar icons have a small triangle in the bottom right hand side. These indicate an extra set of tools; click the icon and keep your finger held down on the mouse to show the dialogue box. To the right of the tool name, there’s a letter. This is the short cut key for that tool - just press the letter on the keyboard to select it. - **The Move Tool** moves items around the canvas. - **The Marquee Tool** allows you to make rectangular or elliptical selections. - **The Lasso Tools** allows you to make custom selections. - **The Quick Selection & Magic Wand Tool** allows you to make selections based on pixels. - **The Crop Tool** lets you remove unwanted parts of your image. - **The Paint Bucket Tool** is used to fill larger areas of an image with colour. The tool functions by filling a given internal area specified by a preexisting outline. - **The History Brush** lets you use the History Panel to create different looks. - **The Eraser Tool** rubs out unwanted parts of your image. - **The Type Tool** is for creating text. You can create vertical type, as well as creating text to use as a mask. ## Move Tool The Move Tool is used to move layers, selections and guides within a Photoshop document. Enable "Auto-Select" to automatically select the layer or group you click on. ## Rectangular Marquee Tool The Rectangular Marquee Tool draws rectangular selection outlines. Press and hold Shift as you drag to draw a square selection. ## Lasso Tool With the Lasso Tool, you can draw a freeform selection outline around an object. ## Polygonal Lasso Tool Click around an object with the Polygonal Lasso Tool to surround it with a polygonal, straight-edged selection outline. ## Magnetic Lasso Tool The Magnetic Lasso Tool snaps the selection outline to the edges of the object as you move your mouse cursor around it. ## Quick Selection Tool The Quick Selection Tool lets you easily select an object simply by painting over it with a brush. Enable “Auto-Enhance” in the Options Bar for better quality selections. ## Magic Wand Tool Photoshop’s Magic Wand Tool selects areas of similar color with a single click. The “Tolerance” value in the Options Bar sets the range of colors that will be selected. ## Crop Tool Use the Crop Tool in Photoshop to crop an image and remove unwanted areas. Uncheck “Delete Cropped Pixels” in the Options Bar to crop an image non-destructively. ## Brush Tool The Brush Tool is Photoshop’s primary painting tool. Use it to paint brush strokes on a layer or on a layer mask. ## Eraser Tool The Eraser Tool in Photoshop permanently erases pixels on a layer. It can also be used to paint in a previous history state. ## Gradient Tool Photoshop’s Gradient Tool draws gradual blends between multiple colors. The Gradient Editor lets you create and customize your own gradients. ## Paint Bucket Tool The Paint Bucket Tool fills an area of similar color with your Foreground color or a pattern. The “Tolerance” value determines the range of colors that will be affected around the area where you clicked. ## Pen Tool Photoshop’s Pen Tool allows you to draw extremely precise paths, vector shapes or selections. ## Rectangle Tool The Rectangle Tool draws rectangular vector shapes, paths or pixel shapes. Press and hold Shift as you drag to force the shape into a perfect square. ## Horizontal Type Tool Known simply as the Type Tool in Photoshop, use the Horizontal Type Tool to add standard type to your document. ## Hand Tool The Hand Tool lets us click and drag an image around on the screen to view different areas when zoomed in. ## Zoom Tool Click on the image with the Zoom Tool to zoom in on a specific area. Press and hold Alt (Win) / Option (Mac) and click with the Zoom Tool to zoom out.
