DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY ANATOMY UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA INTRODUCTION Comparative anatomy is the study of similarities and differences in the anatomy of different organs in different species. The stomach is the dilated part of the digestive tract where digestion is initiated. There is considerable diversity in the form and function of stomach mostly due to dietary habits, among mammals The stomach (ventriculus) receives food from the esophagus and retains it for a time before discharging it into the small intestine. The stomach of the dog has a relatively modest capacity depending on the breed. It consists of four distinct parts (cardia, fundus body and pylorus) The esophagus opens at the cardia while the pylorus opens into the duodenum The cardia is relatively distensible and rapidly expands to accommodate a meal unlike the pylorus which is more constant in appearance (unaffected by the presence of a meal). Differences in the anatomy of digestive tract are often correlated with the nature of their diet. Simple (Single- chambered)- dog (pH-
