Believed that to achieve happiness, people should use their life and liberty (freedom) to make virtuous (good) choices. - **Baron de Montesquieu:** Stated that government should have three separate but equal branches, who can check and balance one another to ensure government does not overreach and take people's natural rights away. - **Jean Jacques Rosseau:** Stated that government is a "social contract" between it and the people, and if the government does not hold up its end of the contract by protecting the people's natural rights, the people have the right to abolish it and establish a new one that will. - **Francois Marie aka Voltaire:** Stated that there should be a separation of Church and State, because when a government forces their citizens to be a specific religion by law it violates their natural right to liberty. *\*Note: Voltaire did not believe the people in government should not hold religious values, he simply believed that forcing people to believe a certain way was a violation of their natural right to liberty. His logic was that it would be better if people [chose] a religion based on its merits.* **Life in the American Colonies** **Guided Notes** **Directions: Fill in the blank with the red words on the PowerPoint slides.** **The 13 British Colonies** 1\.
