Triangle Trade Slavery in the Americas -Sugar and tobacco became a major export to Europe, but harvesting sugarcane involves tough conditions. -Initially, Native Americans were forced to work on plantations, but many were killed due to disease. -The Spanish and Portuguese decided they needed to find another source of labor: SLAVERY. Laws About Slavery -Many colonies enacted slave codes. -These were laws that considered all slaves’ property and granted them almost no rights. -Those who tried to escape were severely punished. Colonial Regions -There were 3 distinct colonial regions. Each had their own ways of life and values. 1. New England 3. Southern Colonies -Plymouth/Massachusetts 1620 -Maryland 1633 -New Hampshire 1629 -Virginia 1607 -Rhode Island 1636 -North Carolina 1663 -Connecticut 1662 -South Carolina 1663 2. Middle Colonies -Georgia 1733 -New York 1623 -New Jersey 1664 -Pennsylvania 1681 -Delaware 1643 13 Colonies New England -Town Life: life revolved around meeting houses and churches. -Trade and Industry: no cash crops. Depended on trade, lumber, and craftsmanship. -Limited Use of Slavery: no large plantations. -Puritan Values: mandated schools. MASSACHUSETTS NEW HAMPSHIRE RHODE ISLAND CONNECTICUT Middle Colonies -Linked the Northern and Southern cultures. -Mixed Agriculture and Industry: some cash crops. -Mixed Use of Slavery. -Mixed Populations: most “diverse” region. Not racially, but ethnically/where they came from in Europe. -Mixed Government: combination of town meetings and royal government. NEW YORK NEW JERSEY PENNSYLVANIA DELAWARE Southern Colonies -Plantations: importance of cash crops (tobacco, rice, sugar). Limited manufacturing. Plantations acted as their own towns. People lived far apart. -Dependence on Slavery. -Population Imbalance: small amount of wealthy people vs. enslaved population. -Elected Representative Assemblies MARYLAND VIRGINIA NORTH CAROLINA SOUTH CAROLINA GEORGIA
