Climate Change What is global climate change? Questions to think about during this Unit Why are certain areas of Canada particularly vulnerable to climate change? How will climate change affect Canada? How can Canadians respond to the impacts of global climate change? The Greenhouse Effect The process by which heat from Earth’s surface is absorbed by gasses in the atmosphere and reradiated back to Earth. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC Greenhouse effect explained Read pg 76-77 of your online text (chapter 3) Greenhouse Gases Check out the chart on page 77 of Human and Natural sources of Greenhouse Gases. Which do you think contributes more to the Greenhouse effect, human or natural? Why? This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY Read Pg 78 – 79 Canada’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Look at Figure 3-4 Why do you think China is the highest producer of greenhouse gases? Look at Figure 3-5 What patterns can you see on the map regarding the nations with the highest GHG emissions? Climate Change Vs. Global Warming: What’s the difference? Climate change refers to significant changes in global temperature, precipitation, wind patterns and other measures of climate that occur over several decades or longer. Global warming is the unusually rapid increase in Earth's average surface temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released as people burn fossil fuels. Describe in your own words the difference between the two. Evidence of Climate Change in Canada Read Pages 80-81 Answer #1 and 2 on Page 81 Read Page 88 Is Climate Change Real? 1) Summarize the 2 perspectives 2) Which one do you agree with?
