GOD CALLS AND CHOOSES ABRAHAM UNIT III - LESSON 11 HAVE YOU FELT LOST AND CONFUSED? HAVE YOU FELT ALONE WITH NO ONE TO TURN TO? HAVE YOU EVER WANTED TO GIVE UP? Whether we like it or not, life is always filled with obstacles, pains, and challenging situations that test our faith. Experiencing challenges in life could be an occasion to return to God. It could be a time for us to deepen our personal relationship with Him. Abraham, our FATHER OF FAITH, also experienced such. THE TESTING OF ABRAHAM Genesis 22:1-3; 9-14 p.116-117 Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 2 Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac— and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” 3 Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. 9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. 12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” 13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram[a] caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.” ANSWER THE QUESTIONS: Describe how Abraham proved his strong faith to God. Why did God stop Abraham from offering his son? Why do you think the story of Abraham shows his act of firm faith? HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR FAITH? Certain things, events, and occasions in our lives happen without a concrete explanation or reason. Life’s questions are so many and not all of them have immediate answers. There are instances in our lives when it is impossible to find answers to all our questions. However, it is important for us to hold our faith. CHRISTIAN FAITH -is also both “free” and “morally obliging”. Our faith is a free response. It is our personal decision, not even God can force us to believe. As believers, we Filipinos experience this paradoxical combination of freedom and obligation in our family, relationships, and friendships. It is natural for us to return the love that others gives us in our own special ways. God, who by loving us the most, has the greatest claim to us, lives in us, and keeps us most free. CHRISTIAN FAITH -is both “reasonable yet more than natural reason” Faith is a gift that brings enlightenment. St. Augustine quotes Isaiah 7:9 “Unless you believe, you will not understand” This expression of authentic faith was exemplified by Abraham. making him the father of all nation God gave him Isaac sacrificed his own son The faith-life story of Abraham is one of a kind, presenting God as the Lord whose demands are absolute, whose will at all times is very hard to comprehend, and whose final word is grace. With faith in God’s loving protection, we shall not fear that something bad will happen to us. WHAT SHOULD WE DO IF FAITH IS NOT PRESENT? Finally, it is our Christian responsibility to nourish our faith through the reception of the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Reconciliation. HOW CAN YOUR FAITH BE MANIFESTED IN WORDS AND DEEDS?
