As we look around, we see God’s amazing provision for His creatures. p. 40 PHOTOSYNTHESIS Organisms called consumers eat other organisms to get energy. Organisms called producers harness the sun’s energy to make food. – Photosynthesis uses energy from the sun to turn carbon dioxide and water into glucose, a type of sugar. Oxygen is produced as a waste product. PHOTOSYNTHESIS carbon dioxide + water + light energy sugar + oxygen Reactants Products pigments colored substances that absorb light energy p. 39 chlorophyll the green pigment that absorbs sunlight energy and uses it to power the process of photosynthesis located in the chloroplasts p. 39 PHOTOSYNTHESIS PROCESS Different enzymes are needed for the chemical changes. Energy captured by chlorophyll is stored in the chemical bonds of sugar molecules. Consumers obtain energy by eating producers or other consumers. PHOTOSYNTHESIS Oxygen is a product of photosynthesis. Aerobic cellular respiration can transform energy in sugar into a usable form of ATP. The process requires oxygen that is produced by plants & algae during photosynthesis PHOTOSYNTHESIS 3C REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. Photosynthesis uses sunlight to make glucose from _____. 3C REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. ANSWER water and carbon dioxide (p. 38) CHAPTER 2 REVIEW QUESTIONS 2. You want to determine whether a cell under a microscope is eukaryotic or prokaryotic. What structure should you look for? CHAPTER 2 REVIEW QUESTIONS 2. ANSWER a nucleus (p. 31)
