As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord. After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints. This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. "Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me." He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you. Never, ever, during your trials and testings. Plot - It is the sequence of events. Conflict - It is the struggle Kinds of Character 1. Major Character - central figure of the story 2. Minor Character - only appears once or twice in the story 3. Confidante - who listens to the major character’s emotions/thoughts 4. Foil - bears opposite characteristics, traits, and Kinds of Character 5. Stock - has universal roles and appears in most narratives A character is revealed in a poem through characterization. It is the act of describing a character in a literary piece. Characterization may be direct or explicit. Characterization Direct or Explicit - when a poet provides description of the character, or another character does it to introduce him/her to the reader Indirect or Implicit - when a character’s thoughts and actions are intentionally added to the literary piece to reveal the character in a Conflict Two types: Internal - struggle of a character between his/her thoughts and feelings External - struggle between a character and another character, a character and the society he/she lives in, or character and natural Types of External Conflict 1. Character vs. character - struggle between a character to another character 2. Character vs. society - occurs when a character is in a societal norm, government rule that does not agree with his/her situation 3. Character vs. nature - Plot 1. Exposition - introduction to the story and characters 2. Rising Action - initial conflict is introduced 3. Climax - exciting part and turning point of the story 4. Falling action - story turns into a downward slope or reduced excitement 5. Resolution (Open-page ending 10)of the story Kinds of Plot Linear - when it follows the sequence of pyramid plot of development (page 10); the story is presented chronologically Non-linear - when the events of the story are not presented in the order it happened Sociocultural Context This refers to social and cultural factors that influence the creation and interpretation of poems. It can include the political climate, economic, and cultural conditions of a specific time and Historical Context This refers to the time period in which the poem was written. This impacts the poet and affects of influence their work. Examples: wars, revolutions, Let’s Apply!
