CIC REVIEWER THELMʼS BACKGROUND Dr. Thelma Navarrete Clemente also known as “Thely” Born on October 11, 1921 under Dr. Guillermo Rustia, an Obstetrician Her mother is Ursula “Chuling” Frank from San Isidro, Nueva Ecija and her father is Nicolas Navarrete from Panghulo Obando, Bulacan. Maternal grandparents are Lola Felipa and Lolo David, Felipa was great in kitchen and David would be the one teaching Thely the english language by reading her the newspaper back to back and would tell her the men and women of science. Thely was born on the month of the Holy Rosary, she was baptized at the Binondo Church and her godmother was Tomasa Goduco, a relative of her mother, her godmother on her confirmation was Dalmacia Lao Heraldes neighbor in Binondo. Thely met her husband, Luis Canicosa Clemente while she was studying at UP ○ Luis was from Calamba, Laguna ○ In April 26, 1945, Luis asked her hand in marriage, on April 27 at 3pm, they tied the knot through a civil wedding in Tondo, Manila. ○ On December 16, 1946, they got married again at Our Lady of Holy Rosary Church, reception was then held at the Navarrete Antipolo Residences. ○ In 1948, they bought a two-story building. The first floor was housing a 10-bed maternity clinic and the second floor was serving as their residence. ○ Luis then got sick and was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease. He undergo dialysis and kidney transplant wasnʼt even recommended since he also have other underlying issued such as Hypertension, Emphysema, and Cardiovascular stroke in 1982. ○ Luis sadly passed on November 22, 2012. Luis and her have 4 children together. ○ Melinda, the oldest, born on June 12, 1948. Went to UP for allied health med profession and in 1992, together with her husband, Eng. Russel Gutierrez, and their two children went to San Francisco, California. ○ Edgardo, the second child, born on November 22, 1950. Passed the medical boards on 1979 and is married to Rhodora Julian. ○ Carmina, the third child, born on August 11, 1954. Graduated at UP with a degree in Business Administration, she is married to Dr. Jose Rey Desales, the head of the Department of Surgery of the Lung Center of the Philippines. ○ Luis , the youngest, born on January 9, 1959. Graduated at UP with a degree in Marine Biology. In charged of the hospitalʼs IT program since 1993. Married to Mar. Antoinette Licas and had two children. EDUCATION BACKGROUND Primary Education was at San Nicolas Primary School Elementary: Pedro Guevarra Elementary School ○ Her fav. teacher was Mrs. Cecilia Mariano Decalzo ○ “AD ASTER PER ASPERA” (through hardships to the stars) ○ “Love of Country” Thelmaʼs Declamation won the top prize. ○ In 1934, graduated Valedictorian High School: Arellano High School ○ Her IQ led her to land on the top section ○ On October 1938, graduated 3rd in her class. College ○ First admitted to UP college of liberal arts ○ Summer of 1939, enrolled in UP Baguio. ○ In June 1940, she enrolled in UP College of Medicine ○ In March 1941, Thely was through with her first year but on December 1941, Pearl Harbor was bombed. ○ March 1945, she applied and got accepted at an internship in Ob- Gyn at North Gen. Hospital run by pediatrician, Dr. Fe Del Mundo as the hospital director. She completed the requirements but wasnʼt able to march until 1946 because of the on going war. ○ On November 1945, Thely took the medical board and passed it with flying colors as the 11th placer. ○ Thely then left for US in 1956 to pursue a postgraduate in Obstetrics at Margaret Maternity Hospital and Gynecology at Jercey City Medical Center. CMC BACKGROUND In 1960ʼs, their family moved to West Avenue in Quezon City, but the clinic in Tondo, remained in operation. In 1966, with the blessing of Luis, she took a loan with the Equitable Bank to buy the property along Quezon Avenue using their West Avenue property as collateral for the 270,000.00 pesos to buy a lot. In 1967, at the age of 47, she started to build Capitol Medical Center In March 19, 1970, on the Feast of St. Joseph the Patron Saint of the hospital, the seven-story CMC was blessed and inaugurated officiated by Monsignor Artemio Casas, Bishop of Manila. In June 22, the doors of the hospital was open to the public. Their first ever patient was Mrs. Josefina Edralin, who delivered a baby girl and Thely was the one to assist her. The school of nursing and doctorʼs offices was blessed in June 1975 with Rev. Monsignor Amado Paulino and Fenny Tatad, wife of Information Secretary Francisco “Kit” Tatad, standing in for Imelda Marcos as guest of honor. ○ June 1974, the school of nursing piloted with 60 students and the graduation of the first batch was on 1977. ○ The nurses program has logged a 100% passing rate in licensure exams. In 2004, the school reopened and changed its name to Capitol Medical Center Colleges to reflect diversity if its program offerings. School year 2010 - 2011 was when BS RADTECH and BS MEDTECH was offered. CMC was Thelyʼs crowning glory as a business woman and a doctor. Father Gus Balingit was the live-in chaplain in CMC. ○ Every new machine, new facility, or building is blessed by the priest before it is pressed to service. ○ The merry month of May is a time of color, pageantry and tradition at CMC. It is the month of Flores de Mayo, the month long culminates in the Santacruzan. ○ June is a special time for CMC, its anniversary is a month long celebration. ○ Thelyʼs office was full of images of saints because of her religious background. CMC FOUNDATION Established in June 6, 1996. The hospitalʼs finest expression of charity and corporate social responsibility. TNC was the pet name for Thely, it stands for “Thelma No Charge” ○ A verbal acknowledgment of the doctorʼs giving heart and he natural inclination for paying back to a community that has been good to her, her family, and to CMC. Its mission is to provide medical assistance to marginalized sectors. It is a mission that requires teamwork and collaboration among the hospital, its medical staff and donor. The health program is centered on the Foundationʼs adopted community; Bgry. Paligsahan and Roxas Elementary School near Roxas distrct. CMC Pediatrics Department has a year round program of assistance for Gen. Roxas Elem. School. The foundation also sponsored the further education of the CMC Resident Priest in their pursuit for Masteral Degree and doctor of PHD or Divinity The Capitol Medical Center made a trademark in Quezon City. THE RENAISSANCE WOMAN Thely was not only academically gifted but also artistically gifted. In the summer of 2006, Thely signed up for the summer art class at CMC. Visual artist Fernando Sena was the master who would guide minds, hearts and hands to express feelings and thoughts on canvas Thely also had a passion for fashion. When she was a bit younger, special occasions merited special attire fashioned by well known masters of high fashion such as Ramon Valera, who went on to become a National Artist to Fashion and Pitoy Moreno. The hands that hqve ushered countless babies into this world also dish out words that inspire and set on canvas images culled from the memories of the heart.
