When engaging with contemporary art, viewers are challenged to set aside questions such as, “Is a work of art good?” or “Is the work aesthetically pleasing?” Instead, viewers consider whether art is “challenging” or “interesting.” Contemporary artists may question traditional ideas of how art is defined, what constitutes art, and how art is made, while creating a dialogue with and in some cases rejecting the styles and movements that came before them. Many contemporary artists are self-taught and did not have formal education. Originality is not an issue in contemporary art. an artist can get another artist's work and add to it, redesign or interpret it using other materials. Subject matter in contemporary art is not confined to representations of human figures. The favorite subjects in contemporary art are children, women or the environment. In school, students and teachers play an important role in the process of assembling meaning about works of art. Some artists say that the viewer contributes to or even completes the artwork by offering his or her personal reflections, experiences, opinions, and interpretations. One of the foundations of 21st Century Contemporary Art’s philosophy is to allow artists to present their work in their own words and to encourage viewers to consider, react, and respond to visual art. Moreover, bringing contemporary arts into schools and communities enables educators to promote curiosity, encourage openness and dialogue. Contemporary artists address both current events and historical ideas. These references help educators and students make connections across their curriculum and support cultural dialogue that concerns larger frameworks, such as ideas about beauty, personal and cultural identity, family, community, and nationality.
