Also, glad to know that the textbook incorporated information from Youcat and Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) that pertained to the sixth-grade syllabus, specifically, on Gospels. I congratulate all the team members for spending an enormous amount of time editing, formatting, and revising the textbook to its current look. The present book is the first attempt in this new project of the revision of our catechetical textbook series. Let us wait to get the real feedback of this current textbook, and after that, we can make necessary editing. If it is appealing to our younger generation, let us complete our catechetical textbook series in this current format. “You are the Light of the World, may your light shine before all” (Matthew 5:14). In the gospel, Jesus advised his disciples that they are the light of the world. He sent them to transform the world and make it a better place through their actions. The Church is called to proclaim the Good News of salvation to “the ends of the earth”. In this context, it is very important we remember what our Holy Father Pope Francis said, “God is proclaimed through the encounter between persons, with care for their history and their journey. Because the Lord is not an idea, but a living Person: his message is passed on through simple and authentic testimony, by listening and welcoming, with joy which radiates outward.” May our actions reflect kindness and a generous spirit, may our words express affection and encouragement, and our thoughts radiate with concern and compassion for each other. Let us strive to shine for all to see. May God bless you all. Yours in Christ Jesus, Mar Joy Alappatt Bishop, St. Thomas Syro Malabar Catholic Diocese, Chicago C AT E C H E T I C A L T E X T B O O K S E R I E S SY R O M A L A BA R C H U R C H 5 FOREWORD F or years, the priests, parents, students and Sunday school teachers of the Syro-Malabar community in the USA had been requesting revisions to the Catechetical textbooks, and the Department of Faith Formation, with the approval of Bishop Mar Jacob Angadiath and Bishop Mar Joy Alappatt, took the initiative to make it happen. The revisions incorporated the American English language, culture, and context while maintaining the Syro-Malabar Synod-approved content for each textbook. The textbooks’ design, pictures, and format have been given a US-style while keeping the essence of the Syro-Malabar Synod-approved content intact. The textbooks now include additional activities and resources at the end of each chapter, based on the American context and using questions from YouCat and Catechism of the Catholic Church. The textbooks were edited by professionally qualified second-generation Syro- Malabar Catholics in the United States and incorporated new American Bible Revised Edition verses. The Department of Faith Formation started with the revision of the 8th, 9th, and 10th-grade textbooks during the first phase and, during the second phase, revised the 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade textbooks. The entire process was a team effort under the leadership of the Eparchial Department of Catechesis. Mr. George Nellikunnel took the lead and initiative to edit the 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade textbooks, and the Eparchial Curia, Eparchial Catechetical Council, and several others provided editorial comments and suggestions. These revised textbooks are a testament to the dedication and hard work put in by the Department of Faith Formation and the entire Eparchial leadership to provide a modern and updated learning experience for the children in our Sunday schools. The revised textbooks will enlighten and inspire the next generation of Syro-Malabar Catholics in the USA and perhaps even beyond. Rev.
