Characteristics of living things Living things grow in size, reproduce, and ~ Plants and animals increase in size as they are able to repair themselves grow older ~ Living things produce offspring ~Living things repair worn or injured parts Living things require energy ~ plants obtain energy from the sunlight ~ animals eat plants, other animals, or both to obtain energy Living things respond to changes in their ~ animals try to escape from predators environment ~ Plants grow roots in the direction of moist soil Living things have a lifespan Living things have a life cycle. Humans for examples, grow old and die Living things produce waste ~ living things produce unusable or unwanted materials that they release to the external environment as waste Compound microscope A compound microscope is used to see cells. A compound microscope uses lenses and a light source to magnify the specimen. Magnification is the degree to which the appearance of a specimen is enlarged. A field of view is the visible area of the specimen seen through the eyepiece of a compound microscope. Plant and Animal cells (on paper) What is the nucleus and what role does it play in the cell? A nucleus is the control centre in a cell; it stores the genetic information that directs all of the cell’s functions. It is known as the control centre of the cell because it regulates all cellular activities. It contains chromosomes which carry information that the cell needs to keep functioning. Know the two parts that only a plant cell contains and their function. Two parts that only a plant cell contains are the cell wall and the chloroplast. The Cell wall is a rigid structure that provides support and protection. The cell wall acts as a filtering mechanism. Chloroplast is the site of photosynthesis, a process that allows plants to use the sun’s energy to make food. Two things control cell movement in animal cells? The two things that control the cell movement in animal cells are Flagella and the Cilia. The flagella is a tall like structure that propels cells through their environment. The Cilia are hairlike projections that help propel the cell or move the substances surrounding the cell.
