Colegio Mater Salvatoris Science 4th grade Name:___________________________________________ Date _____________________________________ #______ Chapter 2 Outline CHAPTER 2 DOING SCIENCE 1. WHY DO WE RESEARCH AND WHAT TOOLS DO WE USE? A. Scientists are curious, they formulate questions about the world around us and try to find solutions to the problems humans have to deal with. B. Scientific instruments- scientists use specific instruments to observe, gather, and measure the data needed to do investigations. i. Microscope- ______________________________________________________________________________ ii. Hand lens- makes objects look bigger iii. Balance scale- ____________________________________________________________________________ iv. Forceps- use to pick up small objects v. Beaker- _________________________________________________________________________________ vi. Thermometer- measures temperature C. MICROSCOPE BALANCE SCALE THERMOMETER FORCEPS 2. WHERE DOES RESEARCH TAKE PLACE? A. Many spaces may be used for scientific purposes such as: laboratories, classrooms, the bottom of the ocean, outer space… B. There are specific research centers or organizations dedicated to science such as: i. Pharmacies- ________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ ii. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention- ________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ iii. NASA- ________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________ iv. The Arecibo Observatory- 1. Built in the 1960’s 2. Made great contributions to the study of outer space 3. One of its major discoveries was the first planets outside the solar system. 4. Was the largest Radio telescope in the world 5. What happened in 2020 to the Arecibo Radio telescope? ________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________ v. A biochemist conducts their investigations in a laboratory, a zoologist may conduct their investigations in a zoo or on the field and a geologist, in a cave or on the soil. 3. HOW DO THE BRANCHES OF SCIENCE COMPLEMENT EACH OTHER? A. Although there are 3 branches of science in which each one of them study specific sciences, the branches may work with one another in the solution of problems. i. For example, a zoologist studying an animal species may refer to chemical, geographical, or oceanographic knowledge to find out more about that species. B. What is a scientific community? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ C. Congresses and magazines i. Congresses are spaces for dialogue and debate among researchers. ii. Scientists stay updated in current research thanks to the congresses and conferences where progress and ideas are presented. iii. The most important science magazine is Nature and Science. Magazines help draw attention to a research project. D. Nobel Prize in science i. Who invented the Nobel Prize in science? _____________________________________________________ 1. He was known for inventing the _____________________________________________________ ii. In which year was the Nobel Prize created? ___________________________________________________ iii. Which country gives the Nobel Prize? ________________________________________________________ iv. Which scientists have won the award twice in physics? __________________________________________ 4. WHAT IS THE ROLE OF SCIENCE IN PUERTO RICO? A. There are countless spaces dedicated to scientific research in Puerto Rico. Scientists in Puerto Rico who do outstanding work may be awarded with the Agustín Stahl Prize. B. Ana Roqué de Duprey i. She was an educator, writer, and scientist, founded the first woman’s suffrage organization in Puerto Rico in 1917. ii. What did she study? ______________________________________________________________________ iii. Her biggest contribution to the field of science was Botánica Antillana, notebooks that documented the Caribbean flora from the early twentieth century. iv. She was never able to publish her manuscript because the scientific community of her time had no confidence in her findings. C. Puerto Rico produces 90% of the world’s pacemakers. 5. HOW ARE EXPERIMENTS CONDUCTED? A. Scientists must conduct experiments to prove their hypothesis. B. What is a vaccine? ___________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________ C. Thanks to technological advances, scientists are able to conduct experiments with digital models.
