ProQuest Ebook Central, https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/shctom/reader.action?docID=1080959&ppg=20 Common steel structures: Steel has high strength per unit mass. Hence it is used in constructing large column free structures Following are the common steel structures in use. Roof trusses for factories, cinema halls, auditoriums etc. Trussed beams, crane girders, columns etc in industrial structures. Roof trusses and columns to cover platforms in railway stations and bus/car stands. Single layer or double layer domes for auditoriums, exhibition halls, indoor stadiums etc Plate girder and truss bridges for railways and roads Transmission towers for microwave and electric power Water tanks Chimneys. Steel structures design and practice : N. Subramanian, UTAS- Shinas College Library Advantages of steel structures: (i) High strength per unit mass. Hence even for large structures, the size of structural steel is small, saving space in construction and improving aesthetic view. (ii)It has assured quality and high durability. (iii)Speed of construction is another important advantage of steel structure. (iv)Steel structures can be strengthened at any later time, if necessary. It needs just welding additional sections. (v)By using bolted connections, steel structures can be easily dismantled and transported to other sites quickly. (vi)If joints are taken care, it is the best water and gas resistant structures. Hence can be used for making water tank also. (vii)Material is reusable. Steel structures design and practice : N. Subramanian, UTAS- Shinas College Libr Disadvantages of steel structures: (i)It is susceptible to corrosion. (ii)Maintenance cost is high, since it needs painting to prevent corrosion. (iii)Steel members are costly. Steel structures design and practice : N. Subramanian, UTAS- Shinas College Libr Types of steel: Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon Apart from carbon by adding small percentage of manganese, Sulphur, phosphorus, chrome, nickel and copper special properties can be imparted to iron and a variety of steels can be produced. Increased quantity of carbon and manganese imparts higher tensile strength and yields properties but lower ductility, which is more difficulty to weld. Increased Sulphur and phosphorus beyond 0.06% impart brittleness, affects weldability and fatigue strength. Chrome and nickel impart corrosion resistant property of steel. It improves resistance to high temperature. Additions of a small quantity of copper also increases the resistance of corrosion. Steel structures design and practice : N. Subramanian, UTAS- Shinas College Lib Carbon steel: Carbon and manganese Used - buildings and bridges, axles, gears, shafts, rails, pipelines and couplings, cars, fridges and washing machines Minimum Ultimate tensile strength = 410 to 440 MPa Minimum yield strength = 230 to 300 MPa High Yield carbon steel: Has high carbon content, shows reduced ductility & toughness. Used - buildings and bridges, axles, gears, shafts, rails, pipelines and couplings cars, fridges and washing machines & transmission towers, light weight structures Minimum ultimate strength = 480 to 550 MPa Minimum Yield strength = 350 to 400 MPa Medium and high strength micro alloyed steel: Low carbon content but achieves high strength due to addition of alloys such as niobium, Vanadium, titanium or boron. Used - oil and gas extraction, construction, and transportation. Minimum ultimate strength = 440 to 590 MPa Minimum yield strength = 300 to 450 MPa High strength quenched and tempered steels: Heat treated to develop high strength. Used - tools, springs, structural steel, and even swords. Minimum ultimate strength = 700 to 950 MPa Minimum yield strength = 550 to 700 Mpa. Steel structures design and practice : N. Subramanian, UTAS- Shinas College Lib Weathering steels: Chrome and nickel impart corrosion resistant property of steel Used – suitable for outdoor conditions – building and bridge constructions Minimum ultimate strength = 480 MPa Minimum yield strength = 350 MPa Stainless steel : Low carbon steel, used in Kitchen sinks, Surgical tools, Building Architecture. Minimum 10.5% chromium Max 20 % chromium Minimum 0.5% Nickel Steel structures design and practice : N. Subramanian, UTAS- Shinas College Libr Fire resistant steel: Thermo mechanically treated steel. Perform better than ordinary steel under fire. Properties of steel: Physical properties Mechanical properties Unit weight of steel, ρ = 7850 kg/m3 Yield stress,fy E = 2 x 105 N/mm2 Ultimate or tensile stress, fu Poisson’s ratio, μ = 0.3 Maximum percentage elongation Modulus of rigidity G = 0.769 x 105 N/mm2 Ductility, weldability, toughness, corrosion Coefficient of thermal expansion αt = 12 x resistant and machinability. 10-6/oC Steel structures design and practice : N.
