The performance and survival of business organization depends on its management.  Managers are needed to convert disorganized resources of people, machines, and money into useful enterprise. Importance of Management (Cont.):  To sum up the importance of management includes the following: 1- To the society: Management ensures and organizes the mobilization of national resources to achieve macro-economic, social and political objectives. 2- To the business organizations: Management seeks to perform a number of tasks that leads to an increase in the standards of living of the society as a whole, management functions would enable the organization to use its resources effectively and efficiently to accomplish its objectives. Importance of Management (Cont.): 3- To the individuals: Management initiates and creates the opportunity to individuals to achieve their personal goals through typing them with organizational goals and also offers them professional career development through its concern for continuous human innovation. Dr. Ibrahim Reda 5 2. Definition of Management: “Knowing exactly what you want people to do and then seeing that they do it in the best and cheapest way. It is the process of achieving organizational goals through planning, organizing, leading and controlling the human, physical, financial, and informational resources to achieve the organizational goals in an effective and efficient way”. Definition of Manager: “Manager is someone whose primary responsibility is to carry out the management process which includes the four functions of the management which are planning, organizing, leading and controlling the human, financial, physical and informational resources to achieve the organizational goals in an effective and efficient way”. Difference between Efficient & Effective:  Effective:  A measure to ensure the goals chosen is these right goals.  Organizations are more effective when managers choose the correct goals and achieve them.  Producing the needed goals (results).  Making the right decisions successfully. Difference between Efficient & Effective (Cont.):  Efficient:  A measure to ensure the resources is used well to achieve goals.  Managers try to minimize the inputs of resources to achieve the same goals.  Doing something well without wasting (Time, Energy, Money).  Using the available resources wisely. Dr. Ibrahim Reda 9 5. The Managerial Functions: The functions of management do not usually occur in a tidy, step-to- step fashion. Types of Managers: Managers can be classified according to:  (A). Levels of the organization.  (B). Different areas of the organization. According to levels of the organization:  (1) - Top managers: o Achieve the organizational goals, overall strategy, and operating policies. o Represent the organization in front of the external environment. o Responsible of the performance of all departments in all over the organization. o Translate the plans, strategies, and goals to instructions to the middle managers. According to levels of the organization (Cont.):  (2)- Middle managers: o Supervise and coordinate the activities of the first- line managers. o Responsible of finding the best way to use the departmental resources to achieve the organizational goals. o Responsible for performing the goals, strategies, and plans that the top managers created. According to levels of the organization (Cont.):  (3)- First line managers: o Supervise and coordinating the activities of operating employees (Non-management). o Responsible for the Day-To-Day operations. According to Different areas of the organization:  (1) - Marketing Managers.  (2)- Financial Managers.  (3)- Operations Managers.  (4)- Human resources Managers.  (5)- Others Like Supply Chain Managers.  Note: See (Chapter 7: Business Organization Functions). Managerial Roles (Cont.):  (1) - Interpersonal Roles: o Coordinate and interact with employees and provide direction to the organization. o Links with people inside and outside the organization to achieve the organization goals.  (2) - Informational Roles: o Tasks needed to obtain and transmit the information for the management of the organization. o Analysis information from internal and external environments. o Use the information to affect positively on people inside (employees) and outside the organization. Managerial Roles (Cont.):  (3) - Decisional roles: o The methods the managers use to create plans, strategies and to allocate resources to achieve the organizational goals. o Responsibility of unexpected crisis. o Take decisions for initiating or investing new projects or programs. Managerial Skills:  (1) - Technical skills: o Ability to use specific knowledge, methods, or techniques in performing the organizational work.  (2) - Conceptual skills: o The ability to understand the complexities of the overall organization. o The ability to think in the abstract and into the future. Managerial Skills(Cont.):  (3) - Human resources skills: o The ability to communicate, understand ,and motivate both the individuals and the groups. o The ability to lead and control the peoples’ behaviors. Is the management an art or a science?  In fact effective management is both Art & Science so successful managers know the importance of combining both the science and the art of management.  Management is an art of getting things done through people.  Management is a science of believing that there are ideal managerial practices for certain situation.  (Art) Even though managers may try to be scientific as much as possible, they also must make decisions and solve problems on basis experience and personal views. (Cont.):  (Science) they can use quantitative models and decision making techniques to arrive at appropriate decisions but they need to adopt a scientific approach to solve problems. Dr. Ibrahim Reda 22 10. The Scope of Management: Management processes are applied in a wide variety of settings including:  Profit seeking organizations: Large businesses. Small businesses. Startup businesses. International businesses.  Non-Profit Organizations: Governmental organizations. Public educational organizations. Public health care organizations.
