CENTRAL ASIAN ARTS AND CRAFTS UNIT III – LESSON 3 – ARTS 8 (MAPEH) ◦The Central Asian art is created by the largely Turkic peoples of modern countries such as Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan. The arts are mainly influenced by the art of China, Iran (Persia), and Greece. Kyrgyzstan Arts and Crafts ◦The arts and crafts of the Kyrgyz people have progressed over the centuries. It was formed based on the needs of the people’s everyday life and the traveling way of life influenced it much. The Kyrgyz are known for their forms of arts and crafts like the following: The ancient stone sculptures near the Burana Tower are located on the famous Silk Road, Kyrgyzstan. – Stone Works These are the traditional felt rugs (shyrdaks) in a Kyrgyz yurt. – Felt Art The Kyrgyz chess set is made of wood. – Wood Carving Kyrgyz’s jewelry designs are usually shaded triangles, intersecting circles, zigzags and four-petal rosettes, radial and starry rosettes, bracket forms, and a “running wave”. – Jewelry making Animal skins were used to make a variety of household articles including leather, clothing and footwear, kitchen containers, horse harnesses, tail-straps, saddle-girths, bridles, and saddle-clothes. – Leather products Embroidery has always been a female craft or girls thing. Many embroidered items were intended for practical use as well as for the decoration of the yurt. Along with colorful fabrics, mats, and felts, embroidered items made a cozy ensemble decorating a man’s shelter. May household articles were decorated with embroidery. Their distinctiveness is part of their system and everyday life which is also evidently reflected in their arts and crafts.
