Understanding Japan Culture Japan is an archipelago, or string of islands, on the eastern edge of Asia. Japan is popularly referred to as the Land of the Rising Sun. It is best known for its scenic beauty, food, and cleanliness. Understanding Japan Culture The culture of Japan is well known around the world, including its art, cuisine, music, and popular culture, which encompasses prominent comic, animation and video game industries. Foundations of Japanese Literature In the early Heian period, the system of phonograms known as kana (hiragana and katakana) was developed. These are the writing systems that are better known in Japan today. Foundations of Japanese Literature The first writing of literature in Japanese was occasioned by influence from China. Kanji constitute one of the two systems used to write the Japanese language, the other being the two indigenous kana syllabaries, this was during the Heian Period. Foundations of Japanese Literature With the aid of these writing systems, Japanese literature has been distributed and recorded in different classes of media. Different Types of Japanese Literature Prose Poetry Manga Anime Japanese Prose - Novels and Stories Japan also has its fair share of stories and novels. Notable among them are Ryunosuke Akutagawa (The Spider’s Thread), Osamu Dazai (No Longer Human), and Haruki Murakami (Norwegian Wood). Japanese Prose - Folk Tales The Japanese has a huge variety of folk tales, some wide-known throughout the world. Examples are “The Tale of Momotaro the Peach Boy” and “The Tale of Princess Kaguya”. Japanese Prose There are also a lot of tales of mythology in Japan, namely that of Izanagi and Izanami, the divine twins that created the world. Japanese Poetry - Haiku and Tanka Haiku Haikus are the most well-known form of Japanese poetry. Traditionally, haiku poems are non-rhyming and have 17 syllables, broken up into a 5-7-5 formation. Japanese haiku poetry centers around themes of nature and the seasons. Japanese Poetry - Haiku and Tanka Tanka Tanka is the modern name for classic Japanese poetry, meaning “short poems.” Tanka poetry is non-rhyming. There are five lines in a tanka with a meter pattern of 5-7-5-7-7. MANGA AND ANIME: The Difference Kimetsu no Yaiba (Demon Slayer) by Koyoharu Gotouge MANGA A term used in Japan that both refers to comics/graphic novel and cartooning which is typically printed in black and white. Comes from two Japanese words, MAN which means “Whimsical” or “Impromptu” and GA meaning “Pictures”. Considered a form of Japanese literature, just as much as the novel or short story, and it is just as rooted in the Japanese cultural context.
