Gr 8 Study Sheet- Cells Diffusion: - Particles of a liquid or gas make the shift from a highly concentrated area to a less concentrated area - Must be able to draw a picture of what it looks like Cell Connection: - In cells, substances need to fo in and/ or out of the cell through selectively permeable membrane -selectively permeable - the ability of the cell membrane to control the flow of substances in and out of the cell. Osmosis: molecules move from area to another , high or low concentration area Cell Connection: Osmosis allows water molecules to flow and to be transported through the cell membrane Unicellular - one cell organisms - They can live on your own - Types of unicellular organisms: diatoms, bacteria, fungi , yeast and amoebae - They can move, get their own nutrients and exchange gas independently Multicellular - more than one cell on its own. They can divide and reproduce - Can be invertebrates ( no backbone) or vertebrates ( backbones) Know examples for both - - People are multicellular- all of the body’s systems work together to perform a function Animals - Able to get their food from other living things - Digestive system breaks components into smaller parts that provide energy for the body - Humans Plants - When plants need food they use photosynthesis to produce energy and get nutrients - Six Characteristics ALL Living Things must have: Made of cells Need energy Grow and develop Respond to the environment Reproduce Adaptations for their environment Similarities between plant and animal cell Both have nucleus, cell membrane , cytoplasm, vacuoles, Golgi apparatus Differences Plants have a cell wall, chloroplasts only in plant cells Animal cells have Lysosomes - help nutrients and food digest properly
