# World of Wind Instruments This document describes various wind instruments from different cultures and historical periods. ## Types of Wind Instruments The instruments are categorized as Aerophones, which are played by blowing into or across holes in a tube, or on a single or double reed attached to a mouthpiece. The pitch is determined by the length of the tube and the number of open holes. ### Examples of Wind Instruments * **Nose Flute:** Prehistoric instrument from Polynesian communities. The nose flute was believed to produce a purer sound than a mouth instrument, and was used to accompany traditional songs and chants. * **Harmonica:** 19th-century instrument from Austria. Used in blues, American folk music, and jazz. The harmonica has free-vibrating metal reeds inside. * **Clarinet:** A single-reed instrument with a cane reed placed in a metal holder on the mouthpiece. The player's mouth overlaps the reed. * **Zummara:** From Egypt, circa 2700 BCE. A double clarinet, this instrument has two parallel pipes, each with a single reed. * **Surnai:** Pre-13th-century instrument from Mongolia. A loud folk oboe characterized by seven holes and a thumb hole. * **Flageolet:** 16th-century instrument from France. Flageolets were popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, used to accompany dances. Single or double pipes. * **Shawm:** Late 13th-century instrument from Germany. A medieval musical instrument made of a single piece of wood in various sizes. The modern oboe is a development of the shawm. * **Accordion:** 19th-century instrument from Austria. Used in folk music, the sound is produced by steel reeds that vibrate when air is forced through them by bellows. * **Sheng:** Pre-500 BCE instrument from China. A bamboo pipe mouth organ shaped like the mythical phoenix. The sound is believed to mimic the cry of the phoenix. * **Bassoon:** c.1800s from Germany. This instrument, like the contrabassoon, uses a double reed made from two pieces of cane tied together. The contrabassoon is the largest instrument in the woodwind family, having the lowest pitch. * **Panpipes:** Prehistoric instrument from South America. Consists of varying lengths of bamboo strips woven together. The music is known as "sikuri". Each instrument has unique characteristics that give distinctive musical tones and rhythms.
