**Categories according to their orientation** Charity-oriented Firstly, there are organizations that are charity oriented. It implies the participation of their beneficiaries and is directed towards meeting the needs of disadvantaged people. For example, Medecins sans frontieres (MSF) is oriented to humanitarian medical assistance to people who get affected by conflict, epidemics, disasters, or exclusion from healthcare. Service-oriented Others can be service-oriented as they provide health, family planning or education services. The programme is designed by the NGO and people are expected to participate in its implementation and in receiving the service. For instance, Marie Stopes provides contraception and safe abortion services in 37 countries around the world. Participatory-oriented Also, there are participatory-oriented organizations. They are characterized by self-help projects where local people are involved particularly in the implementation of the project by contributing cash, tools, land, materials, labour etc. For example, The Water Project is involved in unlocking human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. Empowering-oriented Finally, the empowering-oriented NGOs are focused on helping poor people develop a clearer understanding of the social, political and economic factors affecting their lives. Also, it is aimed to strengthen their awareness of their own potential power to control their lives such as Dress for Success, an Irish NGO which is involved in empowering women to achieve economic independence by providing support and development tools to help them thrive in work and life.
