CAPSTONE PROJECT: GRADE 12 – DESCARTES COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER (STEM) COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER Now that you all have your designated projects approved, we now proceed with crafting your research paper. A research paper/article is essentially a comprehensive report on the study's results, including methodologies, debate, conclusions, etc., in a definite format. In making the report good quality, the research report writers should note the saying 'Try to convey, not to impress.' COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER TITLE The title explains the meaning of the paper in a logical, rigorous, brief, and grammatically sound way. At the top of the list, the title is based, and only significant words are capitalized. It provides a very brief summary of the key variables in the analysis (independent and dependent). To explain the contents of the document, make the title specific enough, but not so technical that only experts can understand. For the intended audience, the title should be fitting. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER AUTHOR AND AFFILIATION The name of the author (or authors) is given below the title, followed by the indication of the institution to which the author belongs. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER INTRODUCTION The aim of the introduction is to guide the reader from a general subject area to a specific field of study. It sets out the context of the research being carried out by: 1. summarizing current awareness and background data on the subject 2. indicating the purpose of the work in the form of the hypothesis, topic, or problem of research 3. explaining your reasoning briefly COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER INTRODUCTION 4. utilized analytical approach 5. highlighting the possible findings that can be uncovered by your analysis 6. describing the paper's remaining structure. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER INTRODUCTION Think of the introduction structure as an inverted knowledge triangle. Organize the data so that early in the introduction the more general aspects of the subject are presented, then narrow towards the more specific topical information that provides context, finally arriving at your statement of purpose and rationale and, whenever possible, the potential results that your study can reveal. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER METHODOLOGY A research paper's methodology section includes the details from which the validity of a study is assessed. There are two key questions answered by the process section: 1. How has the information been gathered or generated? 2. How did it get analyzed? The writing should be concise and correct and written in the past tense. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER METHODOLOGY An effectively written methodology section should: Introduce the overall methodological approach to the study of your problem. Indicate how the methodology fits the overall nature of the study. Your methodology should have a direct link with the issue of your study. In other words, ensure that the issue is genuinely solved by the processes. Describe the basic data collection tools that you will use, such as surveys, interviews, questionnaires, observation, archival analysis, etc. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER RESULTS The results section of the research paper is where you report the findings of your study based upon the information gathered as a result of the methodology [or methodologies] you applied. The results section should simply state the findings, without bias or interpretation, and arranged in a logical sequence. The results section should always be written in the past tense. Present the results followed by a short explanation of the findings. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER DISCUSSION The purpose of the discussion is to interpret and describe the significance of your findings in light of what was already known about the research problem being investigated, and to explain any new understanding or fresh insights about the problem after you've taken the findings into consideration. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER DISCUSSION The discussion will always connect to the introduction by way of the research questions or hypotheses you posed and the literature you reviewed, but it does not simply repeat or rearrange the introduction; the discussion should always explain how your study has moved the reader's understanding of the research problem forward from where you left them at the end of the introduction. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER DISCUSSION The content of the discussion section of your paper most often includes: Explanation of results: comment on whether or not the results were expected and present explanations for the results; go into greater depth when explaining findings that were unexpected or especially profound. If appropriate, note any unusual or unanticipated patterns or trends that emerged from your results and explain their meaning. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER DISCUSSION References to previous research: compare your results with the findings from other studies or use the studies to support a claim. This can include re-visiting key sources already cited in your literature review section or save them to cite later in the discussion section if they are more important to compare with your results than being part of the general research you cited to provide context and background information. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER CONCLUSION The conclusion is intended to help the reader understand why your research should matter to them after they have finished reading the paper. A conclusion is not merely a summary of your points or a re- statement of your research problem but a synthesis of key points. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER RECOMMENDATION Recommendations are based on the results of your research and indicate the specific measures or directions that can be taken. COMPONENTS OF A RESEARCH PAPER REFERENCES Every research project usually relies in part upon the work of others scientific works. Any time an author cites from external materials, he/she is required to identify his/her sources in the form of systematic references. The importance of references section of a paper is not only for giving credit to the ideas and work of other scientists but also to provide the readers with access to these sources. Reference is a published or unpublished source that are obtained information from while writing your research paper. THANK YOU!
