Complementary and Alternative Medicine 1st Semester Finals | Prof. Renato I. Dalmacio, RPh ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Massage Therapy BENEFITS ______________________________ Eases chronic muscle pain and tension Aids injury rehabilitation HISTORY OF Massage Therapy Improves postural problems Relieves back and neck pain Improves limited mobility The history of massage therapy dates back to 3000 BCE Eases condition-related pain (or earlier) in India. Aids sports-related muscle recovery It was considered a sacred system of natural healing. It was used by Hindus in Ayurveda “life health” Sports Massage medicine, massage therapy was a practice passed down through generations to heal injuries, relieve pain, Uses different approach to help athletes in training and prevent and cure illnesses. (Before/During/After sports events) Promoters of Ayurveda believe that illness and disease are caused when people are out of sync with the environment. Massage is believed to restore the body’s Chair Massage natural and physical balance so that it can heal naturally. It is done while the person is seated fully clothed in a portable, specially designed chair. As culture and history evolved, the healing methods of massage traveled to China and Southeast Asia about 2700 BCE. Shiatsu Massage Chinese massage methods developed as a combination of skills and practices of traditional Chinese medicine, Therapist uses varied, rhythmic pressure on certain martial arts and the spiritual yoga training of Buddhists precise points of the body known as “acupressure and Taoists. points” Their methods were very similar to those of the Indians, based on the belief that disease was caused by an imbalance or deficiency of energy of various pathways. By 2500 BCE, massage therapy had made its way to Egypt, where it was depicted in tomb paintings. The Egyptians added their own bodywork techniques and are credited with developing reflexology, which involves applying pressure to specific points or zones on the feet and hands to affect healing. Types of Massage Therapy Swedish Massage It involves soft, long, kneading strokes, as well as light, rhythmic, tapping strokes, on topmost layers of muscles. Relaxing and Energizing Acupressure points are believed to be important FOUR COMMON STROKES for the flow of the body’s vital energy. Effleurage Petrissage Friction Tapotement Deep Tissue Massage The massage therapist uses slow, deliberate strokes that focus pressure on layers of muscles, tendons, or other tissues deep under the skin Pregnancy Massage Hands-on massage during or after pregnancy Uses a table designed to accommodate a pregnant woman’s belly. History of Hilot Originating in the Philippines, Hilot is a hands-on healing art that involves intuition and massage. A Hilot therapist, called manghihilot or albularyo, is trained in massage and body-mind connections. Hilot is a deep-tissue massage with a gentle touch The manghihilot, intuitively scans the body with hand touching as a means to diagnose areas which are energetically imbalanced. Its focus is to identify problems in the body and correct them. How the Manghihilot Identifies Imbalances The client’s pulse (strength, weakness, etc.) will be assessed to identify which (if any) of the four elements (air, earth, fire, or water) is lacking or overpowering. For example, too much fire energies would be too Thai Massage consuming, not enough water could mean stymied emotions, etc. The body would also be evaluated for The therapist uses his/her body to move the client into coloring, temperature, sensitivities, obvious lumps, a variety of positions open sores, etc. Lymphatic Drainage Massage The Four Elements of the Body That Need to be Balanced Gentle massage of the tissues designed to help 1. Promotes relaxation Powders Powders are massaged comfortably with some pressure. This TERMINOLOGIES procedure gives a sense of lightness in the body. This is a preferred treatment for reducing body fat and getting rid of Massage Therapy - a system of assessment, evaluation, flabbiness in the body. It liquefies the excessively accumulated and manual application techniques used in a scientific fat tissue and restores normalcy. manner taking into the account the muscle locations, stress points and other anatomical considerations of the human body. (DOH, 2019) Lymph - a clear, slightly yellow fluid carried by a network of thin tubes to every part of the body. Cells that fight infection are carried in the lymph. Manipulation - the movement of muscles or connective tissue to enhance function, ease tension, and reduce pain in those tissues as well as other beneficial effects. Mind-body connection - relies on an understanding of the term "psychosomatic," mind-body medicine acknowledges the influence of thinking and the cognitive process on the behavior of chemicals in the body, involving the mind in both creating the conditions for disease and helping to heal the effects of disease. Massage Lubricants Oils Oils are the most commonly used lubricants by massage therapists. They have slicker consistency than other lubricants. Because of that, they offer more glide than grip. They can give a comfortable and warm feeling to both the massage therapist’s hands and the client’s skin. They are also slow to absorb to the skin, making them cost-effective. The downsides of using oils as massage lubricants are the greasy feeling they leave on the skin and the tendency of oil drips to stain clothing, towels, and sheets. Lotions Lotions are the quickest to absorb into the skin, among other lubricants. Because of that, they have the shortest glide, making them perfect for deeper tissue massage. They allow better grip needed to apply more pressure to the area being massaged. As a result, they help for better muscle tension release. On the other hand, they can be costly to use with some massage techniques because of frequent reapplication. And the use of low-cost lotions can even be more costly in the long run than expensive creams. Creams Creams feel thicker than oils, giving a better grip that allows working on deeper tissues. They absorb to the skin but not as quickly as lotions. Because of their consistency, they are less likely to stain clothes, towels, and sheets. They are most suitable for massaging one area at a time, such as for muscle soreness relief. Acupuncture It is an alternative medicine methodology originating in ancient China that treats patients by manipulating thin, solid needles that have been inserted into acupuncture points in the skin. According to Traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating these points can correct imbalances in the flow of qi through channels known as meridians. ○ Needles should be sterile Advantages Simple technique to learn. It is simply passed on through a series of instructions or initiations. DID YOU KNOW? Therapeutic touch is considered a biofield energy therapy Therapeutic Touch is categorized as a biofield energy therapy by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). Biofield therapies are techniques that intend to affect energy fields that surround and penetrate the human body. NCCIH notes that, although scientists are studying these phenomena, the existence of such fields has not yet been definitively proven. Therapeutic touch Complements conventional care Therapeutic Touch is not a substitute for medical treatment. It does complement conventional medical care and supports the person's body to be in the best condition to heal. Therapeutic Touch is beneficial with other therapies, such as acupressure, massage, imagery, biofeedback, and psychotherapy. ○ Acupressure - massage therapy based on finger pressure to mobilize Qi Energy Therapy: Magnetic Therapy Types of Artificial Magnets Used ______________________________ 1. Classification of Energy Medicine The US-based National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) classifies energy medicine into Putative Energy Medicine These are health care methods which invoke physically undetectable or unverifiable energies. It includes Biofield energy healing therapies where the hands are used to direct or modulate "energies" which are believed to affect healing in the patient. Examples: ○ Therapeutic Touch (TT) ○ Reiki ○ Pranic Healing ○ Crystal Therapy ○ Chakra healing ○ External qi ○ Healing Touch ○ SHEN therapy ○ Acupuncture Veritable Energy Medicine These are health care methods involving scientifically observable energy. Bioelectromagnetic-based therapies use verifiable electromagnetic fields, such as pulsed fields, alternating-current, or direct-current fields in an unconventional manner. Examples: ○ Magnet Therapy ○ Color Puncture ○ Light Therapy/Heliotherapy ○ Cymatic Therapy
