# Origin of the Term "Degenerate" originates from 19th-century medicine. 80 years ago (1937), a Nazi propaganda exhibition in Munich, called "Degenerate Art," was a demonstration of a severe cultural policy that condemned free art. # Meaning during the Nazi Era During the Nazi regime, any artwork or cultural movements inconsistent with the Nazi aesthetics were labeled as "Degenerate Art". These included Expressionism, Impressionism, Dadaism, New Objectivity, Surrealism, Cubism, and Fauvism. The affected artists were systematically marginalized and persecuted. The whereabouts of many confiscated artworks remain unknown. # Example Otto Freundlich's sculpture "The New Man" was confiscated by the Nazis in early July 1937 and later destroyed. Freundlich was murdered on March 9, 1943, in the Lublin-Majdanek concentration camp.
