Welcome to Christ The King High School Have you ever heard of the term “Business Ethics?”  Dilbert on Business Ethics The Business Ethics of Nick’s Popsicle Hu  stle BUSINESS ETHICS AND PHILOSOPHY What does the term “ethics” mean to you? Why do you think ethics is important in business? Can you think of an example of a time a business engaged in unethical behavior? BUSINESS ETHICS DEFINED 1 OF 2 Morals – A person’s personal philosophies about what is right or wrong Business ethics – Comprises organizational principles, values, and norms that may originate from individuals, organizational statements, or from the legal system that primarily guide individual and group behavior in business Principles – Specific and pervasive boundaries for behavior that should not be violated – These often become the basis for rules (human rights, freedom of speech). Values – Enduring beliefs and ideals that are socially enforced Business Ethics Defined 2 of 2  Ethics – Behavior or decisions made within a group’s values or morals – Right or wrong behavior is defined by the group. – Within corporate culture there are rules and regulations that determine right/wrong. Examples  Business Ethics  Guidelines for how people and groups should act in a workplace. Example 1: A restaurant manager ensures food is prepared hygienically because it's the ethical thing to do, even if shortcuts would save time. Example 2: A clothing store pays its employees fair wages, even though it could make more profit by paying less.  Morals  A person’s personal beliefs about what is right or wrong. Example 1: Deciding not to cheat on a test because you believe it’s wrong to gain an unfair advantage. Example 2: Choosing to stand up for a friend who is being bullied because you think it's the right thing to do. Examples  Principles  Rules or boundaries for behavior that people should follow. Example 1: Freedom of speech is a principle that allows people to share their opinions without fear of punishment. Example 2: Treating everyone equally is a principle that helps prevent unfair discrimination.  Values  Beliefs or ideals that people or society believe are important. Example 1: Teamwork is a value that helps a group of students complete a group project successfully. Example 2: Responsibility is a value that encourages students to submit their homework on time.
