# SEMESTER 2 (P1) - BUILDING TECHNOLOGY 1 ## REVIEWER ### SCIENTIFIC BACKGROUND #### (HARDWOOD) #### RADIAL SAWING (QUARTER SAWING)HYLLA Log is native to Mexico and has been transported south to the Philippines. Dimension Lumber is perpendicular to the growth rings. This is considered the "bread and only true" method of sawing. Most commercially grown mahogany species are cut this way. #### SEASONING TIMBERS After sawing, lumber undergoes seasoning. * Mahogany grows slower but season defects are found during a controlled drying process. * Moisture content must be 15-20% for suitable levels for construction. #### DEFORMATIONS * **Knot** - implies the presence of a tree core. * **Wood Check** - a rapid drying rate can kill native plant wood separation of wood fibers along moisture content between wood cells. * **Wood Shake** - a separation of wood fibers along wood rays. * **Wane** - the surface of wood dries faster than the inside of the wood. In the Philippines' National Formula W/ Sample Solution: * **MC = Weight of water in furniture / Weight of oven dry wood** x 100. * A 6 kilogram wood during the growth of the tree is considered vulnerable but highly prized. After drying, the wood is now 4.5 kilograms. * **MOLAV** is a 2 kilogram (weight of water in wood) complete separation of wood. * A valuable Philippine tree. * **Weight of fresh wood / Weight of water in the wood** x 100 = **33%**. * Among the most expensive lumber. * The absence of wood or presence of bark defines the corners of the wood. #### GREEN LUMBER VS. DRY/SEASONED LUMBER * Lumber with violet flowers. * **Bow, Crook, Cup, Twist** #### WOOD DEFECTS AND DEFORMATIONS ![Wood Defects and Deformations Diagram](Image Description: A diagram showing the following wood defects: bow, crook, cup and twist. The diagram shows a section of a wooden plank with each defect labeled. ) ### 2 TYPES OF WOOD #### (SOFTWOOD) WOOD ### TYPES OF SEASONING * **Kiln Drying** - most materials are suitable for almost always used in the construction of the wood, aged (looking and loose grained lumber). * **Engineered Wood** - dries to the moisture content without causing structural applications. Do not bear a fire or apply heat. * **Air Drying** - a controlled drying process where it is almost never aged with leaves that are hardly resistant for wood. * **Glulam** - allows furniture and dimension lumber to be glued together by heat. * **Plywood** - constructed with at least 3 layers of veneer that are 5mm in thickness. * **Block Board** - a high value lumber in softwood, taking glued together bar of an anhydrous chemical. These create a * **Production of Wood** * **Angiosperms** - "low" moisture wood reducer, shirving and processing leaves annually. ### ENGINEERED WOOD * **Melamine** - 50% of the lumber members to laminate and sheets upon placing to differentiate between. * **Laminate** - usually involves dry wood to create a swollen state. #### DIFFERENT TYPES OF SAWING: * **Hyla** - is 10% of the wood can be modified. * **Particle Board** - are chipped wood, particle board, and shavings with resin as binder. #### THE SAWYER #### LUMBER SURFACING * **MDF/HDF** - the different value of wood products. Measured on different sides of the wood. #### TYPES OF SAWING Breaking down wood residuals into 2, 6, 9, 12 (or 16 wood resals). * **Flassawing (Plain Sawing)** wood is processed into a 1 side board. * **C/S (High Section Sawing)** boards are cut such that growth rings can be * **Oriented Strandboard** - a plywood made from wood chips covering the whole surface, resulting in a varied edge. The edges placed on the top and bottom are glued together by heat. #### LUMBER CLASSIFICATIONS
