Headline Formula: Subject+Verb+Object Lead The first paragraph of a news article. It is the most important part of the article, summarizes the story. Lead Answers right away the most important questions: 5Ws and H. Kinds of Lead Straight Lead Novelty Lead a. Contrast Lead b. Epigram Lead c. Picture Lead d. Punch Lead e. Quotation Lead Straight Lead Depending on the nature of the story and its driving news elements, a straight lead can focus on one or a few six question words. (5Ws and H) Straight Lead Novelty Lead This kinds of leads are best used in writing news feature. They are written in such a way that they attract the attention or carry out a definite purpose. Writing Lead 1. Pack the most important information in one sentence. 2. Go direct to the point. 3. Rarely use the “when” and “where” leads. Writing Lead 4. Use less than 30 words. 5. Avoid starting with articles: A, an, the. 6. Do not mention names unless the person is well-known. Body ✓ The details of the lead. ✓ Arranged from the most important to the least important. ✓ One sentence, one paragraph rule. Body ✓ Sentences are generally less than 25 words. ✓ Include quotations from at least two different people. Tips 1. Make sure that your facts are accurate. 2. Keep your sentences short. 3. Use the S-V-O formula. 4. Always use active voice. Tips 5. Always use present tense in headline. 6. Avoid long and complex words. Tips 7. Always write in third person. Do not use “I”. 8.
