Book Reviews, Literary 12 Criticism, and Collections "What we become depends on what we read after all of the professors have finished with us. The greatest university of all is a collection of books." Thomas Carlyle INTRODUCTION Have you ever looked for a poem that you learned when you were a child but have not seen in print since? Or a short story that you read several years ago but cannot recall where it appeared . . . or a review of a current book . . . or a critique of a novel? This chapter reviews a variety of sources that would help you find this type of information. Just as you use indexes to find individual articles in magazines, journals, and newspapers, so also must you use special finding aids to find book reviews, individual poems, stories, essays, plays, speeches, and articles or essays that criticize or analyze an author's literary work. Becoming familiar with some key finding aids for these types of materials is extremely useful. BOOK REVIEWS A book review is an essay or an article that evaluates and provides a critique of a book, usually of one that is newly published or one that is forthcoming. It provides authors and publishers with an independent evaluation of the work. The success or failure of a book's sale frequently depends on the kinds of reviews it receives. Librarians and bookstores use reviews to justify book purchases; readers use them to aid in book selection or to get a different perspective on a book that they have read. Book reviews are usually published in periodicals or on the Internet. Although there are journals which are devoted exclusively to book reviews, most often reviews appear as separate articles in periodicals and newspapers. They vary in length from a brief paragraph to a lengthy essay. Book reviews are generally supposed to be objective, but, by their very nature, they reflect the personal opinions and knowledge of the reviewer. Some reviewers are selected to write reviews because of their special areas of expertise. This is true of reviewers in scholarly journals. Other reviewers are professional writers who are in the business of writing book reviews. Many reviews that appear on personal pages on the Internet or on the pages of online bookstores are written by individuals whose main qualification is that they have read the book. Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals, 1802—1974. Ed. Evan Ira Farber. 10 vols. Woodbridge, CT: Research Publications, 1983—1984. An author and title access to about 500,000 reviews from 150 humanities joumals. Names of reviewers are also given. Volume 10 has a title index. The two indexes used most frequently to locate book review information in print are Book Review Digest and Book Review Index. The Combined Retrospective Index to Book Reviews in Humanities Journals, also listed here, is relevant for historical materials in the humanities. Figure 12.1 illustrates the entries found on the subject and title index page of Book Review Digest for the entry "Women.' Selected parts of the entry are labeled to assist you in understanding how to read the entries. Notice that this work, like many printed indexes, uses centered subdivisions to guide your eye down the column or page under the main topics. If you were searching for "women's discrimination in employment," for instance, you would begin with the subject "women," then follow the subdivisions alphabetically on the page to "employment." The second to last entry, "Tomaskovic-Devey," is a title which might be useful to you for this topic. Having identified a book review on your topic on the subject and title index page, your next step would be to locate the author of the book being reviewed among the main entry pages of the Digest. Figure 12.2 shows the citation to the review of this work, along with the publisher's summary, and excerpts from two different review sources. See Appendix A- 1.3.7 and Appendix A-2.2.11 for examples of both review citation formats. 361 BOOK REVIEW DIGEST 1994 TOLKIN, MICHAEL—Continued tect, covering such topics as construction of stable strucmatt. Periodical Indexes and Databases Periodical indexes and databases, discussed in Chapter 8, can be useful in finding book reviews. To find reviews of books on certain topics, you might search a database by using the search phrase "[subject] and book review." If you know the author of the book you might search for "[author] and book review." A search in EBSCOhost for "book review and literature" lists book reviews in a variety of publications on topics dealing with literature. You can also search by the title of the book. Other databases useful for finding book reviews include: Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Web of Science). Philadelphia: ISI, 1989—. Updated weekly. Contains data on items from more than 1,144 journals, including individually selected relevant items from more than 6,800 science and social sciences journals. Searches can be limited to book reviews as a document type. Available by subscription only. Humanities Abstracts. New York: H.W. Wilson, 1984—. Available from WilsonWeb, FirstSearch, Ovid, and others. Updated monthly. Indexes more than 300 key humanities publications, including reviews of books, plays, ballets, musicals, and television and radio programs. Literary Resource Center. EBSCOhost. Provides full-text critical analyses, reviews, biographies, bibliographies for more than 100,000 authors. Available by subscription only. Readers' Guide Abstracts. New York: H.W. Wilson, 1984—. Available from WilsonWeb, FirstSearch, Ovid, and others. Comprehensive abstracting and indexing for periodicals with full text of selected periodicals back to January 1994. Includes book reviews as well as reviews of movies and plays. LITERARY CRITICISM Works of literary criticism contain articles or essays that describe, analyze, or compare an author's novel, poem, play, short story, or other literary work. Literary criticism is a more in-depth analysis than a book review and includes both interpretation and evaluation of the work. DEFINING TERMS Definitions are sometimes needed for particular literary terms, such as "allusion," "satire," etc. Below are three useful sources for this type of information. Cuddon, J. A. A Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary' Theory. New York: Wiley-Blackwell, 2013. Harmon, William. A Handbook to Literature. New York: Prentice Hall, 2010. Murfin, Ross C. The Bedford Glossary ofCritical and Literary Terms. New York: St. Martin 's Press, 2009. FINDING LITERARY CRITICISM Since many of the finding aids for literary criticism are arranged by time periods, by type of literature, or other criteria, you must consider the following questions. Ask Yourself 0 Is the author living or dead? 0 Where and when did the author live? o What genre of literature is he/she known for: short stories, drama, poetry, novels, plays? 0 What is the primary language of his/her writings? LITERATURE IN COLLECTIONS (ANTHOLOGIES) The term anthology refers to any collection of varied literary compositions. Anthologies can also include works from a period of history or works devoted to a particular subject or theme. Most anthologies include works of varied authorship, but it is not uncommon to have representative works of one author selected by an editor and collected in an anthology. The outstanding characteristic of an anthology is that it includes many different titles of shorter works under one title. FINDING WORKS INCLUDED IN ANTHOLOGIES Library catalogs usually list the titles of anthologies that the library owns, but they do not include titles of the shorter works in the anthologies. For example, the title, Ten Modern Masters: An Anthology of the Short Story, would be listed in the catalog, but the short story, "I'm a Fool," which is included in the anthology, probably would not be listed. The Internet is an excellent source to locate materials that might be included in anthologies—short stories, poems, plays, or essays—or just to find individual titles of shorter literary works. Most of the materials from anthologies that are being published on the Intemet are older, so there are no copyright restrictions prohibiting free public access. However, some newer materials are also included. The other way to find materials in anthologies is to use one of the indexes available for that purpose. 373 Note the work listed under the heading "women" and the subheading "employment" by R.L. Coser entitled "Power Lost and Status Gained: A Step in the Direction of Sex Equality." This essay is found in a work entitled The Nature of Work, edited by K. Erikson and S. P. Vallas. To retrieve this essay, you would conduct a title search in the library catalog for "nature of work," or search for "coser r l" as the author. The essay will be found on pages 71 through 87.
