Materials used in crowns… Eslam Osama Abdelrhman Hassany Abdallah Khalid Ali Mohamed Abdelrhman Ibrahim All ceramic or porcelain All ceramic crown is usually made entirely from porcelain or other type of ceramic. You might also prefer an all-ceramic crown if you suffer from any metal allergies. Uses / Indications Venners Inlays & Onlays Post & cores FPD All ceramic crown ✓ Advantages Natural look & High esthatics. Biocompatibility. Ability to be bonded to tooth structure. Doesn't conduct heat or cold well reducing temperature sensitivity. ✓ Disadvantages Brittleness. May be cause greater wear on opposing teeth. Difficult to repair intraorally. Porclain fused to metal used for dental crown or dental bridges. porclain fused to metal crowns are often used to restore teeth that are severely damage or decayed. PFM crowns is cap that is cemented over a natural tooth to protect it from damged or for the decay. Pfm restorations can be made using different metals Such as base metal alloys (cobalt-nickel- chromium) Titanium alloys, and gold alloys Advantage Also has similar visual properties to natural teeth. Pfm crown and bridge is their durability. Pfm is strongest and most resistant to chips and cracks. Disadvantage Possible allergies: people who have metal allergies or are sensitive to metal may have an allergic reaction to pfm crowns. Removes more natural tooth structure: in order to place a pfm crow, more of the natural tooth structure must be removed to accommogate this type of crown. Dark line: although pfm crown have a porclain exterior, they still contain metal this metal is visible at the bottom of the crown, normally the gums cover it but a dark line can show if the gums recede. Hybrid ceramics " Currently, various restorative materials are used with CAD/CAM systems". - Glass ceramics are often preferred especially in anterior restorations according to their high aesthetic characteristics - Hybrid ceramics are formed by a combination of inorganic and organic components. - Inorganic and organic structures were consisting of ceramics and polymers, respectively. - Hybrid ceramics contains 86% of ceramics and 14% of polymer. Ceramic structure includes, Advantages 1- causes for less wearing out of the antagonist tooth 2- simple fabrication process 3- It has great aesthetic properties Disadvantages 1-it has poor mechanical properties ☆ Typs of the hybrid ceramics 1- Vita Enamic 2- Cerasmart 3- LU Base metal Some metal such as gold, silver, chromium, platinum, are used in the Manufacturing of dental crown due to their high hardness Advantage: It is characterized by high durability against chewing factors. Stainless Disadvantage: Because of the bright metal color in proportion to natural teeth. Zirconium Types used in zircon denture❓ 1- clear zircon (transparent): This type is characterized by an esthetic appearance compared to solid zircon, it suitable for covering the anterior teeth. 2-soild zircon: This types of zircon is characterized by its hardness its suitable for teeth that have undergone root treatment and used posterior teeth. Advantage: It resistance is tartar on the teeth. It not cause any foul smell in the mouth. Metal free and suitable for people sensitive to metal. Disadvantage: High Cost Breaks fast E-MAX Material It is the most preferable type of crowns due to their aesthetic appearance and better , more comfortable fit. E max crowns are made from lithium desilicated ceramic. Durable and more prone cracking than ceramic metal mix crowns. Translucent color , which ensures the closest color match to your natural teeth. E max crown is the newest and most expensive type of crown. Tougher and more durable than zarconium. The only downside of E-max crowns is the cost. Theses crowns are formed from a single block of these material which make it a high strength crown. As a posterior teeth have a heavy masticatory forces , we should not use E-Max crowns espicially if more than one tooth. ☆ Vita Enamic - is the world's first and only hybrid dental ceramic featuring a dual-network structure. - The innovative material combines enormous load capacity with high elasticity Advantages 1- VITA ENAMIC multiColor, VITA ENAMIC IS T (Translucent), HT (High Translucent), ST (Super Translucent) 2- Preserves natural tooth structure 3- High accuracy 4-Cost-effective reconstruction, thanks to time-saving CAM fabrication and efficient polishing without any firing process PEEK Poly-ether-ether ketone (peek) material is a polycyclic , aromatic , thermoplaaastic polymar that has a linear structure. Because of his high biocompitability , use of peek has incresaed in orthopaedic and trauma cases. The properties of peek material : This material can be produced by casting under heat and pressure with Cad/Cam technology. It shows resistance to hydrolysis , has superior mechanical properties and is resistance to temp It is a biologically inert material. It shows high resistance to chemical wear. Light weiht. It can be modified together with various materials. The most charactrastic property of peek is that it has a low elasticity modulus , close to that of bone. (3-4 Gpa) Very low water absorpition.
