# Living World ## Basic Principal of Life: * **Metabolism** - Metabolism is made of anabolism and catabolism. * **Growth** - Irreversible increase in size, shape, and structure. Growth is intrinsic. * **Reproduction** - Continuity of species, survival. * **Sensitivity** - Thermal/biological, chemical. * **Death** - Body looses it's capacity. ### Living World: * Biotic * Abiotic ## Taxonomic Tools/Aids: * **Herbarium** - A herbarium is essentially a dried plant specimen that is pressed, treated, and mounted on a standard sized sheet in order to preserve it. * **Herbarium was coined by Pitton de Tournefort in the book Elémens.** * **The art of herbarium is initiated by an Italian taxonomist Luca Ghini.** * **Herbaria are effective tools in taxonomic studies.** ## Museum: * There are two methods: * **Wet Preservation:** Small Specimen, formalin in glass container, labelled. * **Dry Preservation:** Large specimen, stuffed with wool/cotton, sealed back. * **Ex: Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Botanical Gardens.** ### **In-Situ:*** * Biodiversity park * National park * Sacred Groves * Lake ### **Ex-Situ:** * Balcony Garden * Aquarium * Tissue culture * Seed bank * Botanical Garden * Zoological park
