BASKETBAL BRIEF HISTORY OF BASKETBALL Basketball game was invented by Dr. James A Naismith in 1891. He was Physical Education Director at the YMCA Collage at Springfield, USA He Wanted to create a game for his students so that they could play inside during winter. He used two peach baskets and a football. The peach baskets were replaced in 1906 by loops fixed on a pole and board 10 feet above the ground. In 1924 basketball Was played as an exhibition game during the Olympic Games at Paris. The Game It is a team game. Each team consists of maximum 12 players. 5 Main +7 Sub = 12 Players 5 players of each team try to score by shooting a ball in the hoop. This game is played on a rectangular court. This court is divided into 2 halves and each half has a hoop at each end. DURATION OF THE GAME Four quarters of 10 minutes each with 2 minutes break between 1st and 2nd quarter and between 3rd and 4th quarter. There is a half time break of 15minutes that is between 2nd and 3rd quarter. Incase of tie extra 5 minutes will be given. 10min+2min+10min+15min+10min+2min+10min 40 minutes playing time 3 pointer arc 6.75mtr Restricted area Free Throw line Restricted Area Perimeter Shot g Perimeter area is a space between the restricted area and three point line. If anyone shoots successfully from this area are called Restricted Area perimeter shots or medium range shots. If any player steps on the 3 point line and converts the shot is considered as a perimeter shot. PENALTY for this foul is 2 free throw and the ball possession will be awarded to the opposing team. NO LOOK PASS NO LOOK PASS is designed to confuse the defence. Because in this type of pass a passer look at one side but passes the ball in the direction. LAYUP SHOT A layup shot is a shot taken right underneath or close to the rim. It is the most basic and high percentage shot in basketball. In this skill a player reaches the ring by taking two and a half steps. BANK SHOT It is a shot that hits the backboard first and then goes into the basket. OFFENCE Offence is a method to score basket. Types of Offence. Early Offence. Set Offence. Motion Offence. Spread Offence. Zone Offence ZONE OFFENCE The zone offence is used to attack all types of zone defences. GOAL TENDING AND INTERFERENCE Goal Tending In basketball goal tending is the violation of interfering with the ball while it is on its way to the basket. GOAL INTERFERENCE It is also a voilation of touching the ball or any part of the basket including the net, backboard during a field goal shot or free throw, while the ball is in contact with the ring. Penalty for goal tending and interference. If the violation is done by the attacking team then no point will be awarded and the opponents get the ball possession.. If the violation is done by the defending team on a field goal, then shooting team is awarded the points for the field goal as if it had been made.. If the violation is done by the defending team during free throw, then shooting team is awarded one point and teachnical foul is called against the offending player. CONTACT – PRINCIPLES CYLINDER PRINCIPLE The cylinder principle is defined as the space within an imaginary cylinder occupied by a player on the floor. The space includes:. The front by the palms of the hands.. The rear by the buttocks.. The sides by the outside edge of the arms and legs. PRINCIPLE OF VERTICALITY The principle of VERTICALITY defines as the space occupied by the player on the floor and above him while he jumps in the air vertically. LEGAL GUARDING POSITION The position obtained by a player in which his both the feet are touching the court and body facing towards the opponent. Guarding a player who controls the ball A player who is controlling the ball must stop or chage direction to avoid contact if a diffensive player has already obtained a legal guarding postion. Guarding a player who does not control the ball A player who does not control the ball is entitled to move freely on the playing court and take any position not already occupied by another player. A player who is in the air A player who has jumped into the air from a place on the playing court has the right to land again at the same place. He also has the right to land on another place on the playing court only when that place is not occupied by anyone. SCREENING Screening is nothing but blocking. And it is a offensive skill. Screen is done when a player who is not in possession of the ball attempts to prevent an opponent from reaching a particular position. LEGAL SCREENING A legal screen is when a player who is screening is not in motion and has both the feet on the floor at the time of the contact. ILLEGAL SCREENING An illegal screening is when a player who is screening was moving and do not have both the feet on the floor at the time of the contact. TERMINOLOGY DRIVE A quick dribble directly to the basket to score a goal. FAKE A movement made with the aim for confusing an opponent. BLOCKING When a player attempts to screen and block the opponent in restricting to move towards scoring. CARRY While dribbling, the ball is held on the palm. SCREEN An offensive strategy in which a player without the ball stands in the way of a defensive player. BALL HANDLER A player dribbling or handling the ball. CHARGE This is a penalty occures when an offensive player with the ball runs into a stationary defensive player and knocks him or her over. TRAVEL It is an illegal move where that occurs when a player runs with the ball without dribbling. DOUBLE DRIBBLE It occurs when a player dribbles the ball with both hands or when a player stops the dribbling and begins to dribble again. DOUBLE FOUL When two players of each team foul against each other at the same time. FRONT COURT Haf of the court where the team is going to score. BACK COURT Half of the court where a team defence the opponents basket or home court where player guard their basket by not allowing the opponents to score. DEAD BALL The ball is dead after every successful field goal, free throw, after any officials whistle or if the ball leaves the court is called dead ball. HELD BALL When the ball is in possession of two opponent players at the same time. FIELD GOAL A basket scored on any shot except free throw. A team may get 2 or 3 points depending upon the distance of the attempt from the basket. FAST BREAK A quick move of ball from back court to front court to attack the defense before they are in good defensive position. PRESS When a defending team pressurizes the opponent by guarding them closely from either court or full court. BOX OUT A player trying to position his body between his opponent and the basket to put himself in the best position to collect a rebound. POSSESSION ARROW It is a plastic or wooden arrow used by scorer to determine that who is going to start each quarter with the ball and who takes possession when jump ball is called. AIR BALL A shot that directly goes into the basket without touching rim and backboard. TRIPPLE THREAT It is an offensive position where offensive players have to use one of the three options which are dribbling, passing or shooting. LOOSE BALL The ball which is in play but not in possession in any of the team JUMP STOP After dribbling or receiving a pass when the player comes to a complete stop with a jump land on both feet. ALLEY - OOP When a player catches a pass in the air and finishes with a shot before landing on the court. NATIONAL GOVERNING BODY OF BASKETBALL BFI – Basketball federation of India. BFI is the governing and controlling body of basketball in India. It was formed on 1950. It organizes all the national tournaments and training camps for boys and girls to prepare teams for international competitions. International governing body of basketball. FIBA – Federation International De Basketball. It was formed on 18th June 1932. The head quarter of FIBA is in Mies, Switzerland. It has 213 national federations affiliated to it. The rules and regulations of basketball are established by FIBA. The international tournaments organized by FIBA are FIBA basketball world cup, Olympic basketball tournament and 3x3 basketball. NATIONAL TOURNAMENTS 1. Youth national basketball championship : It is all India interstate championship which is organised annually. The duration of the championship is two weeks and the tournament is played on the basis of league cum knockout tournament. More than 25 teams participates in this tournament. 2. Federation Cup basketball championship: Federation Cup basketball championship is organised annually where top 8 men and women teams from previous senior national tournament participates. 3. UBA Pro basketball League: UBA – United Basketball Alliance. The tournament was started in July 2015, where 8 teams participates. It is the first men’s professional basketball tournament. The head quarter of UBA is in Pune. INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS 1. FIBA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: The tournament is held after every 4 years between Olympics. The championship started in 1950. The first five Championships were organized in South America. 2. European Basketball Championship : The tournament is organised biannually. It was started in 1935. The first tournament was held in Switzerland. Men’s national teams participates in this championship. 3. FIBA ASIA CHAMPIONSHIP : The tournament was started in 1960 and is held after every two years between men’s national teams of Asia and Oceania. The aim of this championship is to find Asia’s best team. THANK YOU
