JH2224 Basics of MS Paint In the last meeting, we quickly discussed STI’s eLMS and how to use them. We also browsed through the brief introduction of art and its history. Finally, we also briefly discussed MS Paint and its recent changes. This software has not changed drastically – just minor tweaks here and there. As such, we see the all-familiar layout and tools we use in our spare time. The Interface and its Tools Shown below is the complete layout of MS Paint 10. Take note that there have been minor changes since MS Paint 8, and will also be minor changes once MS Paint 11 rolls by. Refer to Figure 1 below. 1 2 3 4 5 Figure 1. The interface of MS Paint 10 There are five (5) things to note in this user interface, defined as the point of human-computer interaction and communication in any device. This is where we, the users, use different items connected to the computer (i.e., the hardware) to input and send information for the computer to process (i.e., using software) and then return it to us as output. In this case, our output involves colors and bit sizes instead of words and bit sizes. 02 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 1 of 7 JH2224 INTERFACE FUNCTION CONTAINS … Title Bar Displays the file’s name The project you are working on in MS Paint (or a default filename if is identified via the File Name (where it is working on a new file). Untitled by default) The Save button quickly saves any progress made in the file Undo and Redo buttons lets you reverse a certain action (Undo) or restore the previously undone action (Redo). There are two (2) configurations: the right-slant nib and the left-slant nib ▪ The airbrush applies color similar to spray paint, where the continuous application of color fills in the gaps while dragging the brush creates a speckled “graffiti” look ▪ The oil brush has a translucent feel per stroke, and it evokes the feeling of paint “running out” in each long stroke ▪ The crayon brush gives each stroke a rough texture, mimicking an actual crayon scribbled on a piece of paper ▪ The marker brush creates broad, translucent yet uniform strokes that can be layered to create complex color styles ▪ The natural pencil brush evokes the feel of a graphite pencil, differing 02 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 4 of 7 JH2224 from the default pencil tool. This results in light-colored lines that can layer on other colors ▪ The watercolor brush is similar to the oil brush, but it feels “diluted” compared to the oil brush o Shapes give you access to a variety of shape tools that you can create by clicking and dragging. This creates a new permanent layer in each shape made. You can manipulate the outlines to be a solid color or add textures similar to the custom brushes in Paint. The two-dimensional geometric shapes can also have their central region filled with color. ▪ The line tool allows you to create a solid straight line ▪ The curve tool allows you to create Bezier curves (i.e., digital curved lines dictated by a series of calculated computer-generated points) ▪ The various shapes available, with the commonly-used ones listed below. Ellipse for creating circles, ovals, and ellipses Rectangle for squares and rectangles; a variation with rounded corners is also available Polygon for creating freehand polygonal shapes. It automatically creates a straight line after each established endpoint by clicking on another space to create a new endpoint. Clicking at the original starting point closes the shape permanently o Line Size dictates the thickness of the lines made on the canvas. Except for the pencil tool, the rest of the tools benefit from this o Colors (also known as the Color Palette) holds 20 default colors for 02 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 5 of 7 JH2224 quick use. Ten (10) slots are available for color mixing, which can be done using the “Edit Colors” tool o Paint 3D allows you to convert your MS Paint work into a Paint 3D editable file (this will be discussed in a future module) View tab o Zoom allows you to view the image up close or far. It also adjusts the image to fit the screen based on its file size o Show or Hide contains three (3) checkboxes that let you access other tools hidden in the user interface (UI) ▪ The Ruler tool lets you view the rulers that frame your UI, indicating the size of your canvas based on pixel measurement ▪ The Gridlines tool lets you view the gridlines normally hidden in the canvas, allowing you greater control when doing image editing ▪ The Status bar tool lets you view the status bar below the canvas, indicating various details in your UI o Display allows you to view the project, either going Full screen or as a Thumbnail The main work area of the program. This is where your images are placed Canvas and are the only editable area. Status Bar Lets you view various The Cursor Coordinates ( ) tells you details in your UI where your mouse cursor is located on the canvas The Selection Size ( ) tells you the size of your selection after using the “Select” tool, based on pixel measurement (by default) The Canvas Size ( ) tells you how big your work area is, based on pixel measurement (by default) The File Size ( ) determines how much memory your image file will consume in your hard drive The Zoom bar ( ) lets you manually zoom in or out of the program 02 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 6 of 7 JH2224 REFERENCES: Churchville, F.
