BARIUM MEAL BY DR. ROAA MOHAMED ATEF SHEHATA LECTURER OF DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY SOUTH EGYPT CANCER INSTITUTE BARIUM MEAL DOUBLE CONTRAST STUDY RIGHT ANTERIOR OBLIQE ( RAO): Body is rotated 40°-70° CR perpendicular to the cassette. central ray at L1 level midway between spine & upside lateral abdomen & one hand width above crest. IN AP AND PA VIEWS: Body is recumbent supine & prone. ( N.B. In the supine position barium is seen in the fundus, and in the prone position barium is seen in the pylorus ). CENTRAL RAY AT L 1 level 1-2 Inches to the left of midline , one hand width above the iliac crest. Entire stomach and duodenum + fundus of stomach filled with barium LATERAL VIEW : Body is in lateral recumbent. CENTRAL RAY AT L1 Level anterior to the mid coronal plane , perpendicular to the cassette and one hand width above the iliac crest. Lateral view , ( patient lie down on the right side , note air in the fundus.), The C shaped duodenum is well seen. LEFT POSTERIOR OBLIQUE ( LPO), RIGHT ANTERIOR OBLIQUE (RAO): Body is rotated 30°-60° Central ray at L1 level mid way between the midline and the left lateral abdomen, perpendicular to the cassette and one hand width above he iliac crest LPO note spine is oblique and the fundus filed with barium, air in the pylorus and cap.
