RIVERSIDE FIRE AUTHORITY FIELD OPERATING GUIDELINES MAYDAY PROCEDURES THE MAYDAY A Mayday code is transmitted when a firefighter(s) is/are in imminent danger or are threatened with a potentially life threatening situation. (Example: trapped, disorientated, injured, low on air, etc.) PERSON OR CREW CALLING THE MAYDAY:  The firefighter(s) transmit a radio message “COMMAND FROM (Unit assigned ie. Engine 1) EMERGENCY TRAFFIC - MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY”  Once acknowledged by command the firefighter shall follow up with a status report: LUNAR - Location, Unit, Name, Assignment and Resources CARAT – Conditions, Actions, Resources, Air and Team Integrity  The firefighter shall then activate their PASS alarm, if able. INCIDENT COMMANDER:  Upon transmission of Mayday, transmit on fire ground frequency “Clear the frequency, emergency traffic only. Go ahead with your mayday.”  Confirm that all needed information possible gathered using LUNAR or CARAT.  Assign new working channel for fire ground operations. Keeping rescue operations on Mayday channel.  Activate RIC as Rescue Group and provide all information that has been obtained. Assign any other appropriate crews to the rescue assignment as needed.  Confirm Dispatch Center is monitoring all traffic on Mayday/Rescue channel, and assign a greater alarm for the incident.  Assign Safety Officer (Rescue Liaison)  Perform a “PAR/ROLL CALL” of all personnel on the fire ground on working frequency.  Establish a second RIC as soon as possible.  Continue management of original emergency, maintaining command and control of all fire ground activities. SAFETY “RESCUE” OFFICER (IF ASSIGNED) or IC:  Monitor all radio traffic on the Mayday/Rescue channel acting as the liaison for the rescue operation, and the Incident Commander.  Communication with Rescue Group, and RIT Crew to achieve desired outcome. CANCELLATION OF MAYDAY:  A Mayday situation may be cancelled when the firefighter(s) have been rescued, or the situation has been resolved.  Communication must be made to all units of the Mayday cancellation.  PAR/ROLL CALL must be done immediately
