# Geography: 19/11/24 ## Dubai's Sustainability To what extent do you think that Dubai is a sustainable city? Dubai is fairly sustainable. Sustainability is the ability to maintain or support a process continuously over time. Normally, maintaining good social, economic, and environmental sustainability is required. In the Middle East, Dubai is arguably the most sustainable city, despite succumbing to extreme temperatures and heat. It is progressively advancing much faster than other cities in the UAE and the entire Middle East. Dubai's sustainability is sound (WIT, 2015). Case studies show this sustainability. It is believed that Dubai is a sustainable city. The reasons include: * **Social, Environmental, and Economic Successes:** Reliability of the service industry for income instead of relying on oil; diverse economy; multi-cultural; automated public transport; low crime rates; massive solar power plant saving 15,000 metric tons of CO2 per year. * **Dubai's Energy Use:** Dubai's total energy use is 8,500,000 kWh/year. This is relatively small compared to other countries. * **Diversity of Income Sources:** Dubai gains income from aviation, tourism, food, imports, exports, and oil. However, despite having a rich oil supply, Dubai tries to diversify its economy and industries beyond oil for income. This is better for economic and environmental sustainability.
