Pharmacology Made Easy Medication Information Table SERMs – raloxifene Category Information THERAPEUTIC USE Postmenopausal osteoporosis—prevention and treatment Reduces risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer ADVERSE DRUG Increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary emboli REACTIONS Hot flashes Stroke INTERVENTIONS Observe for manifestations of thromboembolisms. Use lightweight covers over clients. Monitor bone density. ADMINISTRATION Give orally daily. May give with or without food. CLIENT INSTRUCTIONS Contact provider if client experiences pain in calf or difficulty breathing. Do not take estrogen replacement therapy during treatment. Warn clients that hot flashes may occur. Encourage clients to consume adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin D. Encourage clients to perform weight-bearing exercises (brisk walking, stair climbing) daily. If premenopausal and using raloxifene to prevent breast cancer, use contraception and do not breastfeed during treatment. Do not take estrogen replacement therapy during treatment. CONTRAINDICATIONS Teratogenic Lactation Current and past history of deep vein thrombosis PRECAUTIONS Estrogen therapy Hyperlipidemia INTERACTIONS Concurrent administration with estrogen is not recommended.
