Assignment Pr oblem 1 ( Cable TV Subscr iber s) : The following table shows the number of U.S. households with cable television and a scatterplot of the data. It appears that the data can be represented or modeled by a linear function. A) Find a linear function that fits the data. B) Use the model to predict the number of cable TV subscribers in 2014. Hint: Use point-slope equation y-y1=m(x-x1) Pr oblem 2: Find the equation of the parabola that passes through the points (0, 1), (1, 2), and (3, 1). Pr oblem 3 (Life Science: Hour s of Sleep and Death Rate) : In a study by Dr. Harold J. Morowitz of Yale University, data were gathered that showed the relationship between the death rate of men and the average number of hours per day that the men slept. These data are listed in the following table. A) Make a scatter-plot of the data, and determine whether the data seem to fit a quadratic function. B) Find a quadratic function that fits the data. C) Use the model to find the death rate for males who sleep 2 hr, 8 hr, and 10 hr. Pr oblem 4 (Choosing Models): For the scatter-plots and graphs below, determine which, if any, of the following functions might be used as a model for the data.
