Summary

This document discusses the modification of architectural elements through various factors like light, color, sounds, and temperature. It highlights how these elements contribute to the ambiance and experience of a place. It references Tadao Ando's Church of Light and Notre Dame du Haut, along with various architectural treatments like light wells, light shelves, atriums, clerestories, and monitors, which demonstrate the manipulation of light to enhance a space's character. The text also mentions how the qualities and textures of materials, scale, and air movements influence the architectural experience. The author discusses the role of time in shaping architectural experiences and references Juhani Pallasmaa's book 'The Eyes of the Skin.'

MODIFICATION OF ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE ARCHITECTURAL INTERIORS Ar. Diane A. Jose, MBA MODIFYING ELEMENTS OF ARCHITECTURE Basic elements and the places they identified are modified: By LIGHT By COLOR By SOUNDS By TEMPERATURE By AIR MOVEMENT By SMELLS (and even possibly by tastes) By the QUALITIES and TEXTURE OF THE MATERIALS By USE By SCALE By the EFFECTS and By the EXPERIENCE OF TIME by LIGHT… Light from the sky is the pervasive medium through which sighted people experience the products of architecture; by LIGHT… Light, both natural and artificial can be manipulated by design to identify particular places and to give places particular character. by LIGHT… Light can be related to activity in a place. Different kinds of light can be appropriate for different kinds of activity. Church of Light by Tadao Ando Church of Light by Tadao Ando by LIGHT… Light contributes to the ambiance of the place. One is likely to make the quality of light in a place of contemplation or worship different from that in a place for playing basketball or one for performing a surgical operation. NOTRE DAME DU HAUT NOTRE DAME DU HAUT NOTRE DAME DU HAUT NOTRE DAME DU HAUT ARCHITECTURAL TREATMENT (Natural Light) A light well is an open area or vertical shaft in the center of a building, typically roofed with glass, bringing natural light to the lower floors or basement. Light Shelf —internal sunlight reflector: a device fitted to the inside of a window, used to reflect sunlight toward the ceiling of a room and then farther into the building. Atrium –central hall with skylight: a central hall usually with a glass roof or skylight and extending the full height or several stories of a building Clerestory –vertical windows, located on high walls, extending up from the roofline, designed to allow light and breezes into a space, without compromising privacy. A monitor in architecture is a raised structure running along the ridge of a double-pitched roof, with its own roof running parallel with the main roof. The long sides of monitors usually contain clerestory windows or louvers to light or ventilate the area under the roof. by COLOR… Light itself can be any color; colored glass changes the color of light which passes through it; the apparent colors of material objects are affected by the color of the light that falls on them. Different colors and qualities of light seem to suggest different moods. “Without light, there is no color.” by TEMPERATURE… Temperature has always been a central consideration of architecture when thought of as identification of place. Temperature may or may not be associated with light. In the temperate zones, south facing wall can make a place which is both bright and warm from the light and heat of the sun. “…moving from place to place one passes through zones of different temperatures, related to different purposes and providing different experiences.” by SOUNDS… Sounds can be powerful as light in identifying place. by SMELL… Place can be identified by its smell; a smell can make a place… by the QUALITY and TEXTURE OF MATERIALS… Texture is a characteristic which one can see--in this, it relates to light and the sense of sight; but it is also a characteristic which can feel--in this, it relates to the sense of touch. by SCALE… In architecture, scale refers to the size of something relative to oneself. The experience of place is radically affected by its scale. by AIR MOVEMENTS… Temperature is involved with ventilation and humidity, together they can identify places. Air Catcher by the EXPERIENCE OF TIME… Light provides instant stimulation, but time takes time and sometimes the effects of time are positive or negative. Time is a modifying element of architecture which more under the control of the designer (though not totally so…) “In memorable experiences of architecture, space, matter and time fuse into one singular dimension, into the basic substance of being, that penetrates our We identify ourselves with this consciousness. space, this place, this moment, and these dimensions become ingredients of our very existence. Architecture is the art of reconciliation between ourselves and the world, and this mediation takes place through the senses.” In his book, The Eyes of the Skin: Architecture and the Senses, first published in 1996, Juhani Pallasmaa References: Analysing Architecture by Simon Unwin
