APA CITATION STYLE W2023 SCHOOL OF SO…WHAT’S APA STYLE In the social sciences, we will use APA STYLE FORMATTING. The American Psychological Association (APA) citation style is the most commonly used format for writing in the social sciences. APA tell us how to use:  Format  In-text citations (QUOTES)  References But why???  It allows readers to check your sources easily  It gives you credibility as a writer  It saves you from the dreaded plagiarism WHAT IS A CITATION?  Definition: a quotation from or reference to a book, paper, or author, especially in a scholarly work. Cite your sources using TWO parts  First: an in-text citation gives brief information that helps your reader to cross-reference a reference page at the end of your paper. Cite your sources using TWO parts Second: A reference page lists all the sources you have used and cited in your work. A Reference Page is the LAST PAGE of your essay. How are these two parts connected?  To avoid plagiarism, you MUST have both citations and a reference page.  Every source you use (by quoting, paraphrasing, or summarizing) MUST be listed in the reference page.  Reference page is listed in alphabetical order according to author’s last name. This will match the citation which also start with author’s last name. IN-TEXT CITATIONS  Important information about the source is placed in brackets and set in your essay. What does an in-text citation look like?  Author’s last name, Year of publication, and (sometimes) Page number of quote, paraphrase, or summary. In-Text Citations. When using APA format, the basic in-text citation contains the author’s last name, the date of publication, and often the page number from which material is borrowed. Autho r Date For Example: “In order to maintain academic honesty in your writing, it is important to cite your sources using proper APA style” (Moore, 2013, p. 99). What should I do when the author has already been referenced? Moore (2013) says that “In order to maintain academic honesty in your writing, it is important to cite your sources using proper APA style” (p. 99). Page # ONLY INSERT A PAGE NUMBER WHEN CITING A BOOK. FOR OUR ASSIGNMENTS, WE WILL PROBABLY ONLY BE USING ONLINE SOURCES.
