Course Description The full Course Exam Description (CED) will be posted in Google Classroom AP Precalculus is a course offered to students who have successfully completed Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2. This course centers on the development of a deep conceptual understanding of functions. Students understand functions and their graphs as embodying dynamic covariation of quantities, a key idea in preparing for calculus. Throughout this course, students develop and hone symbolic manipulation skills, including solving equations and manipulating equations, for many function types. With each function type, students develop and validate function models based on the characteristics of a bivariate data set, characteristics of covarying quantities and their relative rates of change, or a set of characteristics such as zeros, asymptotes, and extrema. These models are used to interpolate, extrapolate, and interpret information with different degrees of accuracy for a given context or data set. Students also learn that functions and their compositions, inverses, and transformations are understood through graphical, numerical, analytical, and written representations, which reveal different attributes of the functions and are useful for solving problems in mathematical and applied contexts. Course Content Unit 1: Polynomial and Rational Functions (30-40% of exam) Unit 2: Exponential and Logarithmic Functions (27-40% of exam) Unit 3: Trigonometric and Polar Functions (30-35% of exam ) Unit 4: Functions Involving Parameters, Vectors, and Matrices (Not assessed on the AP exam) Exam Overview The nationwide AP Precalculus exam will be administered on Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at 8am. The exam is 3 hours long. Section I: Multiple Choice | 2 hours | Approx. 63% of Score Part A: 28 questions | 1 hour 20 minutes | Calculator NOT permitted Part B: 12 questions | 40 minutes | Graphing calculator permitted for SOME questions Section II: Free Response | 1 hour | Approx. 37% of Score The 4 free-response questions (non-calculator and calculator) are each worth 6 points Part A: 2 questions | 30 minutes | Graphing calculator required (radian mode) ○ Question 1: Function Concepts ○ Question 2: Modeling a Non-Periodic Context Part B: 2 questions | 30 minutes | Calculator NOT permitted ○ Question 3: Modeling a Periodic Context ○ Question 4: Symbolic Manipulations AP Precalculus Syllabus 2023-2024 SY Ms. Carter - Room 212 [email protected] (students) | [email protected] (parents/guardians) II. Grading Policy: Midterm and final exams will account for 20 percent of your grade. Marking period grades will account for 80 percent of your grade and are determined as follows: ○ Tests 40% ○ Quizzes 30% ○ Projects 10% ○ Participation/Classwork 10% ○ Homework 10% All work will be graded A to F and assigned a numerical value dependent upon the quality of the work shown: A B C D F 90 - 100 80 - 89 71 - 79 70 69 or less (NEW) Students who do not take the AP exam will automatically receive a 60% for the 4th marking period. III. Daily Course Requirements: Needed Supplies: 3 ring binder or 5 subject notebook with lined & graph paper A folder for homework, classwork, and other handouts Pencils/erasers Suggested Supplies: Colored pencils or highlighters Calculator: Numworks Calculator, TI 84 graphing calculator, or equivalent ○ Numworks discount is available until September 24, 2024 Provided Supplies: TI-84 graphing calculator (available in-class / phone swap required to borrow) Textbook: Precalculus: Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic –APⓇ Edition 11th Edition (online version available) IV. Policies and Expectations: Be respectful. Show respect to all. Be prepared. You are responsible for missed work and notes. Be punctual. Show up to class and perform all assignments on time. Any student, who is not in class prepared to begin working when attendance is taken will be considered tardy. Excused Tardy: Students arriving late to class because they were with a teacher (or nurse) are considered excused. ○ The student will be expected to give Ms. Carter a late pass from the teacher or nurse when arriving to class. ○ Passes should include the following: date, time, student name, brief explanation, staff signature Unexcused Tardy: Students arriving late to class because they were in the bathroom, at their lockers, coming from lunch, etc. are considered unexcused. ○ The student will be required to obtain a pass from the security desk. ○ When entering class, the student must complete the tardy log “Google Form” located at the student center before being seated at their desk. ○ Late Arrival Impact: Each unexcused tardy will impact a students’ participation with a 10 point reduction from their board credit grade. Extreme Tardy: Students who miss more than half of class time (for any reason) will be marked absent. Leaving the Classroom: When possible, students should utilize their breaks and lunches between classes to use the restrooms and get water; ○ If a student should have to leave the room for any personal reason (restroom, locker, guidance, water, etc.) it must not be during the first or last 10 minutes of class. ○ All students must sign-out at the student center prior to leaving the classroom and receive a hallway pass. ○ Only ONE (1) hallway pass will be allowed at a time, meaning only one student will be permitted to leave the classroom at any given time. ○ Hallway pass privileges may be suspended or terminated at any time at the discretion of the teacher. Dress Code: Students in violation of the schools’ dress code policy will receive detention … PERIOD! Student ID: Students should enter the classroom with their IDs visibly displayed, as outlined in the school handbook. Food and Drinks in the Classroom: ○ Only school Grab & Go breakfast is permitted in the classroom. Students must ensure that it does not interrupt/interfere with classroom instruction and that food is cleaned up and placed into the proper trash receptacles. ○ Other food items are NOT allowed in the classroom. ○ Drinks are allowed if they have a twist-top lid; glass containers are strictly prohibited! ○ Failure to adhere to this policy may result in the loss of food and drink privileges. AP Precalculus Syllabus 2023-2024 SY Ms. Carter - Room 212 [email protected] (students) | [email protected] (parents/guardians) Assignment Policy Homework: ○ Homework will be assigned both on paper and online (Pearson & AP Classroom) ○ (NEW) Your online Pearson account at mylab.pearson.com will be used to access online homework and the online textbook. ○ Homework submitted in Google Classroom will not be accepted. ○ All work (when necessary) must be shown on homework. Work shown on homework assigned online must be submitted in Google Classroom by the start of class time. Failure to submit work on show work (on paper assignments) will result in an automatic 20% reduction in your grade. ○ Late homework assignments are NOT accepted and will receive a grade of zero! Classwork/Participation: ○ Attention Signal: During class, the teacher will use a countdown system to grab the attention of the students. The teacher will count down from 5 and by the time the count reaches 1, the class should be quiet and focused on the teacher. ○ Participation: Students are expected to actively participate in classroom discussions by raising their hands to ask and answer questions until called on. ○ Classwork: Students will have at least two (2) in-class assignments per marking period. Classwork must be completed and submitted by the end of the class period to be graded. Students present in class who fail to turn in a classwork assignment will receive a grade of zero! ○ Board Credit: Each student must complete at least ONE problem on the board every two weeks to earn a board credit grade. Board credit problems may include homework review or examples from the day's lesson. The problem must be completed unassisted, with all work shown, and accompanied by a verbal explanation and responses to any class questions. Board Credit Grading: ✓ ++ (100%): Demonstrates complete understanding of the problem, with excellent work and a clear, thorough explanation. ✓ + (93%): Shows a good understanding of the problem, with mostly correct work and a clear explanation, though minor errors or omissions may be present. ✓ (83%): Displays partial understanding of the problem, with some correct work and an explanation that may be incomplete or unclear. ✓- (70%): Shows minimal understanding of the problem and/or needs assistance from a classmate or teacher. 0 (0%): Did not participate in board activity within the two weeks.. A: Absent 2 weeks. The student must make-up the board credit (i.e.complete 2 in 2 weeks). AP Precalculus Syllabus 2023-2024 SY Ms. Carter - Room 212 [email protected] (students) | [email protected] (parents/guardians) ○ Cell Phone/Electronics Use: All electronics (cell phones, smart watches, air pods, laptops, etc.) should be put away and silenced throughout class, unless I specifically say you need to have it out for a lesson. Students will have their devices taken away for the period if asked to put their device away more than once. Students will lose a board credit If devices become an issue, parents will receive a phone call (or email) of the violation(s). Projects: ○ Students will be assigned at least two projects each marking period. (**subject to change) ○ Projects submitted late will lose 11% points per school calendar day late. ○ After 3 school days following the due date, the project will receive a zero. Assessment Policy Students will be assessed frequently. All assessments, quizzes and tests will be administered in-person and on paper. Quizzes: Quizzes won’t always be scheduled. Students should always prepare to take a quiz by completing their own homework and taking efficient class notes. Tests: Cumulative assessments are typically administered at the middle and end of each unit. Students will be given notice when a test is coming up. Failed Assessments: Parent signatures will be required on ALL assessments in which a student receives a grade of 70% or below. ○ Parents/guardians will receive a phone call (or email) after 2 failed assessments within the period. Cheating: It is the students’ responsibility to maintain academic integrity. Any form of cheating will result in a zero on the assignment, an email to your parent/guardian and a referral to administration. Absent Work Policy: Regular attendance is crucial for success in this course. Missing a single class can result in missing substantial amounts of important material and opportunities for participation. Please ensure you attend each session to fully benefit from the course. If you must be absent, you are responsible for obtaining notes from a classmate, making up any missed classwork or assessments, and submitting the previous day's homework. Absences Due to School Activities: If absent for school activities (e.g., field trips, AP fairs, sports games), you are required to show the previous night’s homework and will be required to complete the following day's homework. General Absences: ○ Homework: Missed homework must be completed within ONE class day of your return. Additionally, you must submit the previous night’s homework for credit. I will not provide reminders—failure to follow these procedures will result in a zero for the missed homework. Tests and Quizzes: ○ Day Before a Scheduled Test/Quiz: If absent the day before a scheduled test or quiz, you are required to take it as scheduled. ○ Day Before an Unscheduled Quiz: If absent the day before an unscheduled quiz, you have up to TWO school days to make up the assessment. ○ Day of a Scheduled Test/Quiz: If absent on the day of a scheduled test/quiz, you will take it during class on the day of your return. ○ Multiple Days Absent: If absent for multiple consecutive days, you must see Ms. Carter to arrange a date to make up missed tests or quizzes. Note that make-up tests and quizzes are typically more challenging and may be scheduled before school or during YOUR lunch period. V. Discussing Assignments, Grades & Student Progress Study Groups: Since there is not enough time in class to go over ALL homework problems, students are encouraged to form study groups with other AP Precalculus students to help each other with assignments and study the material. Of course, the student should understand how to do their own work; however, teaching another student the material will help reinforce the topic(s).. Discussing Assignments & Grades: Students are highly encouraged to discuss their own assignments and grades with teachers themselves and in-person. ○ If an in-person attempt to speak with a teacher is not possible or unsuccessful, the student should follow up with an email from their jcpsnj email account to Ms. Carter at [email protected]. ○ Parents/guardians are welcomed to contact the teacher after the students have exhausted all measures or if they have questions/concerns about student progress from their personal email account to Ms. Carter at [email protected]. Tutoring: Tutoring is available from the National Honors Society and Math Club in the 2nd floor library every Tuesday and Thursday starting at 3:15pm. Office Hours: Ms. Carter will be available for students to drop in on most mornings from 8:05 - 8:25 am. If classroom lights are off in the morning, students should assume that Ms. Carter is unavailable. If a student needs to come in before 8:00am, an appointment will be required. Ms. Carter is not available during LUNCH A (11:25-12:10pm) Online Resources: ○ AP Classroom; Pearson ; ALBERT; Larson ; Khan Academy ; Desmos.com ; Youtube
