Summary
This presentation provides an overview of animal and plant cells. It details the structure and function of organelles like the cell membrane, nucleus, and cytoplasm. The history of cell discovery is also included, showing how researchers like Robert Hooke, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, and Robert Brown contributed to the understanding of the cell.

Robert Hooke The discovery of the cells began in 1660 when Robert Hooke examined a cork sample under his own microscope. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek Leeuwenhoek created a microscope with higher magnification and discovered bacteria for the first time in 1676. Robert Brown In 1831, Robert Brown is the first person to discover the nucleus of the cell. Matthias Schleiden & Theodore Schwann In 1838-1839, they discovered the first 2 postulates of cell theory. “All organisms are made up of one or more cells.” “The cell is the basic unit of life.” Rudolf Virchow In 1855, Virchow created the last postulate of cell theory. “Omnis cellula e cellula.” All cells arise from preexisting cells. The Cell Theory “All organisms are “All cells arise made up of one or “The cell is the from preexisting more cells.” basic unit of life.” cells.” Checkpoint! State the Cell Theory. Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell Cell membrane It serves as the skin of the cell that controls the entrance or exit of substances in a cell. Nucleus It is considered the control center of the cell. Nucleolus A dense area inside the nucleus in which RNA is created. Cytoplasm It is a gelatinous semifluid in which the other organelles of the cell are suspended. Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) It is an interconnected membrane system that works as transport network. Ribosome Ribosomes are not membrane-bound. They play an important role in synthesizing essential proteins. Ribosomes Vacuole It stores water and food. It is bigger in plant cells for storage of water. Mitochondrion It is a double-membrane organelle that is called the powerhouse of the cell. Golgi apparatus It is the packaging center of the cell. Chloroplast It is the site for photosynthesis. Cell wall The cell wall is found outside the cell membrane to prevent excessive loss of water. Plasmodesmat a Enables transport and communication between plant cells. Centriole Centrioles are cylindrical in shape and they play an important role in organizing the tubules to maintain the shape of the cell. Lysosome has hydrolytic enzymes used to break down foreign materials such as proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates, and lipids Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell
