There are two forms of anatomy: Microscopic & Gross Anatomy. **What are two forms of microscopic Anatomy:** Cytology & Histology **What is histology?** Biological tissues **What is cytology?** Structure / function of cells **What is gross anatomy:** What we can see & study it with the naked eye. **Surface anatomy?** What we can see & feel from the outside. **Regional Anatomy:** Focus on specific area of the body & everything in that area. **Systemic Anatomy:** Structures working together to accomplish certain functions **What are the different levels of organization of the body:** Chemical/Molecular -> Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Organ system -> Organism. **What molecules make up the body:** Carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen (C.H.O.N) 99% **What are the different organ system levels:** Cardiovascular, Endocrine, Lymphatic, Nervous, Respiratory Muscular, Digestive, Skeletal, Digestive, Urinary, Integumentary Reproductive. **What is homeostasis:** Baseline/normal range of internal environment **What are diseases:** Deviation away from homeostasis, usually leading to illness/sickness. **What is pathology:** The study of disease (the causes & effects) **Supine Position:** lying on back (face up) / Palms face up. **Prone Position:** lying on stomach (face down) / palms face down. **Superior (Anatomically):** Closer to the head **Inferior (Anatomically):** closer to the feet. **Posterior:** closer to the back. **Anterior:** Closer to the front. **Medial:** towards the body's midline. **lateral:** Away from the body's midline. **Proximal:** Toward an attached base (more higher up) e.g. elbow is proximal to the wrist. **Distal:** further away from the body(closer to end of limb) e.g. wrist is distal to elbow **Transverse plane:** Divides the body into an upper & Lower half. **Frontal Plane:** Divides the body into a front & back section. **Sagittal Plane:** Divides the body into a left & right section - Midsagittal: divides it equally into a left & right. - Parasgittal: Divides it unequally into left & right. **Oblique plane:** Any plane not falling into the sagittal, frontal transverse categories. Diagonally oriented or slanted.
